Position Summary

Salem Hospital (NSMC) is seeking a dedicated and versatile Registered Nurse for a long-term contract on Epstein 4, our 30-bed Adult Inpatient Psychiatric unit. This role is ideal for a clinician who excels in a fast-paced environment and is comfortable managing both psychiatric crises and medically acute needs within a psychiatric setting.

• Duration: 13-Week Assignment (02/15/2026 – 05/16/2026)
• Weekly Hours: 40 Hours
• Location: Salem, MA 01970
• Shift Details: Rotating shifts (Days/Eves/Nights) and Every Other Weekend (EOW). Rotating shifts include 7a-7p, 11a-11p, and 7p-7a. Shift blocks typically rotate every 4 weeks.

About the Epstein 4 Unit

The Epstein 4 unit serves an adult population (ages 18–65) with diverse mental health diagnoses, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and borderline personality disorder. The unit also manages dual-diagnosis patients undergoing detox and medically complex patients requiring IV therapy, wound care, and diabetic management.

Key Responsibilities

• Patient Care: Manage a caseload with a 1:7 or 1:8 nurse-to-patient ratio.
• Clinical Leadership: Assume Charge Nurse responsibilities when required, including managing admissions and discharges.
• Medication Management: Utilize Omni Cell dispensing systems and demonstrate expert knowledge of psychotropic medications and potential side effects.
• Acute Medical Tasks: Operate IV pumps and provide specialized care for diabetic patients.
• Regulatory Compliance: Maintain strict adherence to Massachusetts Department of Mental Health (DMH) regulations, including patient rights regarding restraint, seclusion, and legal statuses.
• Documentation: Ensure accurate and timely electronic charting using the EPIC EMR system.

Required Qualifications

• Experience: Minimum of 2 years of inpatient adult psychiatric nursing experience.
• Licensure: Active Massachusetts Registered Nurse (RN) License.
• Certifications: American Heart Association (AHA) BLS and a recognized Certification in De-escalation.
• Legal Knowledge: Understanding of laws pertaining to Guardianship, Healthcare Proxies (invoked vs. confirmed), and Court-Ordered Medications.
• Flexibility: Must be willing to float to other units as needed.

Skills and Competencies

• Proficiency in EPIC EMR is highly preferred.
• Ability to manage the dual-diagnosis population (psychiatric care + detox).
• Strong clinical assessment skills for both mental health and medical acuity.
• On-site training for AVADE and lead EKG will be provided by the facility.
