Description
Job Summary
The Labor & Delivery Registered Nurse provides comprehensive nursing care to women during pregnancy, labor, childbirth, and the immediate postpartum period. The RN monitors maternal and fetal well-being, supports safe delivery, and collaborates with obstetricians, midwives, and healthcare teams to ensure optimal outcomes for mother and baby.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide direct nursing care to patients in labor and delivery.
- Monitor maternal vital signs, contractions, and fetal heart rate patterns.
- Assess labor progression and report changes to the obstetric team.
- Assist physicians and midwives during vaginal and cesarean deliveries.
- Administer medications, IV fluids, and pain management (including epidurals as per protocol).
- Perform neonatal assessment and immediate newborn care after birth.
- Educate and support patients and families throughout labor, delivery, and postpartum recovery.
- Respond to obstetric emergencies (e.g., fetal distress, hemorrhage, preeclampsia).
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation in patient records.
- Ensure adherence to infection control, safety, and hospital protocols.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary healthcare teams for care planning.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or equivalent nursing degree.
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license.
- Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS).
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred.
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification preferred or required in many facilities.
- Experience in obstetrics, maternal health, or acute care preferred.
