Director of Women's & Children's Services – Original Unit Notes
Position Overview
The Director of Women's & Children's Services provides executive nursing leadership for maternal and newborn services, ensuring safe, patient-centered, and evidence-based care across inpatient and outpatient settings. This role has 24-hour accountability for clinical operations, quality outcomes, financial performance, regulatory compliance, and staff development within Labor & Delivery, postpartum, newborn care, and women's health clinics.
Leadership Responsibilities
- Direct daily operations of Women's & Children's Services.
- Provide continuous leadership and administrative oversight for clinical services.
- Collaborate with physicians, nursing leaders, ancillary departments, and executive leadership to improve patient care and operational efficiency.
- Support organizational goals through strategic planning and service line development.
- Serve as the nursing leader during clinical emergencies and organizational incidents when assigned.
Patient Safety & Clinical Quality
- Foster a culture that prioritizes patient safety and high reliability.
- Ensure obstetric emergency response processes are current and consistently followed.
- Lead multidisciplinary simulation exercises and emergency preparedness activities.
- Review patient safety events, identify improvement opportunities, and oversee implementation of corrective actions.
- Promote practices that reduce maternal and newborn complications.
Evidence-Based Practice
- Ensure clinical care reflects current national standards and best available evidence.
- Review and update departmental policies and clinical procedures.
- Support continuing education and competency development for nursing staff.
- Encourage shared governance and staff participation in practice improvement initiatives.
- Promote standardized care to improve consistency and patient outcomes.
Regulatory Compliance
- Maintain compliance with federal, state, and accreditation requirements.
- Ensure department readiness for regulatory surveys through ongoing audits and performance monitoring.
- Oversee documentation standards for obstetric care, fetal monitoring, patient assessment, and clinical interventions.
- Monitor compliance with organizational policies and quality measures.
Operations Management
- Oversee staffing, patient throughput, and resource utilization across all maternal-child departments.
- Coordinate patient care activities with interdisciplinary teams.
- Address operational issues and clinical concerns as they arise.
- Monitor productivity and adjust staffing according to patient volume and acuity.
- Ensure adequate supplies, equipment, and clinical resources are available.
Workforce Development
- Recruit, mentor, and retain qualified nursing staff.
- Conduct employee evaluations and performance coaching.
- Support leadership development and succession planning.
- Promote teamwork, accountability, and professional growth.
- Partner with education and human resources to ensure orientation and competency validation.
Quality Improvement
- Lead departmental performance improvement initiatives.
- Analyze clinical and operational data to identify trends.
- Monitor key maternal and neonatal quality indicators.
- Develop action plans to improve patient outcomes and operational performance.
- Participate in regional and national quality improvement collaboratives when appropriate.
Financial & Strategic Management
- Prepare and manage departmental operating and capital budgets.
- Monitor expenses and identify opportunities for cost-effective resource utilization.
- Participate in long-range planning for program growth and service expansion.
- Evaluate departmental performance using financial, operational, and quality metrics.
Preferred Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing required.
- Master's degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, or a related field preferred.
Licensure & Certification
- Current Registered Nurse license required.
- Electronic Fetal Monitoring certification preferred.
Experience
- Progressive nursing leadership experience in maternal-child health.
- Experience with quality improvement, regulatory compliance, and patient safety initiatives.
- Demonstrated ability to lead interdisciplinary teams and manage complex clinical operations.
