Job Description – Inpatient Pharmacist (Nights):

Facility: San Carlos Apache Healthcare Corporation
Location: Peridot, Arizona

 

Position Summary:

San Carlos Apache Healthcare Corporation (SCAHC) is seeking an experienced Inpatient Pharmacist to provide comprehensive pharmaceutical care for hospitalized and emergency department patients. The pharmacist is responsible for reviewing and dispensing medications, ensuring safe and effective medication therapy, collaborating with interdisciplinary healthcare teams, and maintaining compliance with federal, state, Tribal, and hospital regulations. This position requires flexibility to work night, day, swing, weekend, and holiday shifts, with occasional coverage at multiple pharmacy locations as needed.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Review, verify, and accurately dispense medications for inpatient and Emergency Department patients in accordance with physician orders, hospital policies, and regulatory requirements.
  • Evaluate medication orders for appropriate dosing, allergies, contraindications, drug interactions, and therapeutic effectiveness.
  • Process prescriptions and medication orders efficiently while maintaining accuracy and patient safety.
  • Prepare and verify sterile and non-sterile medications as required.
  • Counsel patients and caregivers regarding medication therapy, administration, side effects, adherence, and disease management.
  • Process controlled substances in compliance with DEA regulations, Arizona Board of Pharmacy requirements, and hospital policies.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary patient care rounds and collaborate with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to optimize medication therapy.
  • Monitor patients for adverse drug reactions, medication effectiveness, and therapeutic outcomes, making clinical recommendations when appropriate.
  • Utilize pharmacy automation technology, including ScriptPro Pharmacy Management System, SP200 Robot, Omnicell Automated Dispensing Cabinets (ADCs), Carousel, and Kirby Lester counting machines.
  • Document clinical interventions and medication activities using RPMS Electronic Health Record (EHR) and other pharmacy information systems.
  • Assist with anticoagulation management, immunization services, and other pharmacist-led clinical programs as assigned.
  • Maintain accurate medication records, controlled substance documentation, and pharmacy inventory.
  • Assist with medication procurement, inventory control, medication storage, expiration monitoring, and formulary management.
  • Respond promptly to medication-related emergencies and support inpatient and emergency department clinical services.
  • Participate in medication safety initiatives, antimicrobial stewardship, quality improvement projects, and departmental performance improvement activities.
  • Precept pharmacy interns, pharmacy technicians, and pharmacy students when assigned.
  • Support community outreach events, public health initiatives, vaccination programs, and patient education activities.
  • Float to other pharmacy areas or practice locations within the organization as needed.
  • Maintain compliance with Joint Commission, CMS, DEA, FDA, Arizona Board of Pharmacy, Tribal, and Indian Health Service (IHS) standards.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by pharmacy leadership.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) from an accredited college of pharmacy.
  • Current, active, unrestricted Pharmacist license (Arizona license preferred; any unrestricted U.S. state license may be considered if eligible under facility requirements).
  • Hospital/Inpatient pharmacy experience required.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • ACLS required.
  • PALS required (may be obtained on-site after hire).
  • Minimum 2 years of clinical pharmacy experience preferred.
  • Ability to successfully pass background check and drug screening.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in inpatient hospital and emergency department pharmacy practice.
  • Experience with RPMS, ScriptPro, Omnicell, and pharmacy automation systems.
  • Previous experience working in Tribal, Indian Health Service (IHS), or underserved healthcare settings.

Schedule:

  • Variable shifts including nights, days, swing shifts, weekends, and holidays.
  • Flexibility to work multiple pharmacy locations as needed.
  • No on-call requirements.
