7p-7a, weekends as needed, first to float
Mother Baby Unit – Boise Hospital (Floor 8)
Unit Overview
- Charting System: Epic
- Unit Type: Mother Baby / Postpartum
- Maternal Beds: 32
- Couplet Care: Capacity for 32 babies (rooming-in)
Patient Volume
- Births: Approximately 350–400 deliveries per month
Staffing & Ratios
- Follows AWHONN staffing guidelines.
- Standard assignment:
- 3 couplets per RN (approximately 1:6 mother/baby ratio)
- Magnesium patients:
- 1:4 ratio
- Occasionally:
- 4 couplets during discharge periods.
- Twin deliveries may create unique assignment ratios.
Required Certifications
- BLS
- NRP
- STABLE
Patient Population
- Postpartum mothers
- Magnesium sulfate patients
- Higher-risk maternal patients
- Twin deliveries
- Well newborns (babies requiring more intensive care are transferred to NICU)
- Cesarean section recovery
- Postpartum tubal ligations
- Circumcision patients
- Frenectomy patients
Experience Requirements
Must Have
- Experience in a similar Mother Baby/Postpartum setting, particularly if the traveler has only one year of experience.
Preferred
- Magnesium sulfate experience
- Two or more years of postpartum experience
Medication/Drip Management
RNs are required to titrate drips.
Common drips include:
- Magnesium sulfate
- Pitocin (per postpartum protocols)
Leadership & Support Staff
- Charge nurse is free of patient assignments.
- Support staff include:
- CNAs
- Unit Clerk/Health Unit Coordinator
- Discharge Nurse (days) for education
- Lactation Consultants (ABM model)
- Contracted staff for:
- Hearing screens
- Newborn photography
- Car seat safety
- Newborn screening
- Laboratory assists with newborn metabolic screenings.
- Unit is locked/secured.
Provider Coverage
- Neonatologist: Available 24/7 in NICU (responds to emergencies)
- Newbornist/APP: Available 24/7
- OB Hospitalist: Available for emergencies
- Anesthesia: In-house 24/7
Respiratory Support
- Mothers may occasionally require supplemental oxygen.
- Newborns needing more than basic oxygen support during resuscitation are transferred to the NICU.
Telemetry
- Telemetry is rarely used.
- Occasionally utilized for postpartum mothers with cardiac histories.
Scheduling
- 12-hour shifts
- Days: 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM
- Nights: 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM
- Manager creates the schedule.
- Travelers are scheduled where staffing gaps exist.
- No self-scheduling.
Weekend Requirements
- Every other weekend (EOW) or as needed.
Holiday Requirements
- Expected to work holidays as needed.
Call Requirements
- No required call or standby.
- Opportunity to pick up extra shifts if desired.
Floating
Travelers are expected to:
- Float to Meridian and Nampa hospitals to care for similar patient populations.
- Occasionally serve as patient sitters on other units.
- Be the first to float and first to sit.
Dress Code
- Any solid or printed scrub color.
- Scrubs must be clean and professional.
- Closed-toe, closed-heel shoes required (no Crocs).
Orientation
- Typically 2–3 shifts.
- Travelers receive orientation to the unit.
- Expected to float to Meridian and Nampa and serve as sitters before permanent staff.
