Description
Registered Nurse – Med Surg (4th Floor)
Location: Wheeling, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights
Shift Hours: 12-hour shifts (18:45–07:15)
Weekly Hours: 36 hours
Unit and Patient Care Details
- Med Surg unit with 52 private rooms
- Patient ratio: Mostly 1:7 (day and night shifts)
- Common patient types:
- Ortho post-ops
- Basic neuro post-ops (laminectomies, discectomies, spinal fusions)
- General post-ops (gallbladders, mastectomies, sleeve gastrectomies)
- Medical diagnoses including COPD, cerebral palsy, pneumonia, cellulitis
- Hemodialysis patients (experience with peritoneal dialysis highly preferred)
- Floating assignments include other Med Surg units, Med Surg/Oncology, and possibly IMC (Med Surg overflow)
- COVID unit float required when needed
Required Certifications and Licenses
- Current RN license
- BLS (AHA) certification required
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification required
- ACLS certification is a plus but not required
Clinical Responsibilities and Skills
- No IV starts; IV team starts all IVs; RNs assess IV sites
- Manage drips such as heparin, PCA with morphine, occasional Ativan drip; no cardiac or insulin drips
- Ventilator support includes intermittent BiPAP, CPAP, and high flow oxygen
- Remote telemetry monitoring as needed (telemetry monitored on a different unit)
- Reading telemetry strips not required but allowed if experienced
Staffing and Support
- Charge Nurse carries a full patient assignment and is supported by a Clinical Assistant (CA)
- 4-6 CNAs per shift with ratios of 1:10-12
- In-house hospitalist and intensivist coverage 24/7
- Respiratory therapy and pharmacy services available 24/7
Scheduling and Work Environment
- Every-other-weekend schedule (3 weekends out of 6 weeks)
- Holiday rotation required
- Schedules made 6 weeks in advance; up to 6 requests off per schedule allowed
- Scrub color: Navy blue for RNs (top, bottom, jackets), no hoodies
Orientation
- General hospital orientation followed by 2 full shifts on the unit
Requirements/Qualifications
- Valid RN license in West Virginia
- Med Surg (2 years of experience)
- Med Surg experience within the last year
- BLS issued by American Heart Association
- NIHSS
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Driver's License
Additional Requirements
- Must have a valid, unexpired driver’s license within a 50-mile radius
- Licensing issues must be disclosed at time of submission
Summary
This is a 13-week night shift RN position on a Med Surg unit with a focus on post-op and medical patients, including dialysis experience preferred. The role requires BLS and NIHSS certifications, with ACLS as a plus. The nurse will float to the COVID unit as needed and work 12-hour shifts with a supportive team and comprehensive hospital resources.
