Women's Services – L&D/PP/MB (LDRP) | Elmore Hospital

Unit Overview

• Annual Deliveries: ~200 births/year
• Level of Care: Level I Maternal & Newborn Care
• Patient Population:
  • Well mothers and well newborns
  • Spontaneous labor
  • Inductions
  • Cesarean sections
  • L&D triage
  • Routine non-stress tests (NSTs)
  • Inpatient/outpatient newborn hearing screens

Unit Layout

• Labor Rooms: 1
• LDRP Room: 1
• L&D Triage Beds: 2
• Postpartum Beds: 2
• C-Sections: Performed in the main OR
  • L&D RN attends as baby nurse only
  • Does not circulate

Staffing & Ratios

• AWHONN Ratios:
  • Labor: 1:1
  • Couplet Care: 1:3
• Typically 2 RNs per shift
• Labor nurse follows the patient through delivery and postpartum as a couplet assignment
• Charge RN on every shift
• Nursing supervisors available 11 of every 14 shifts
• CAP (Certified Nursing Assistant) shared with Med/Surg

Required Certifications

• BLS
• ACLS
• PALS
• NRP
• STABLE

Experience Requirements

• Minimum 1 year experience in:
  • Labor & Delivery
  • Postpartum
  • Newborn Nursery
  • OB Triage
• First-time travelers accepted
• Preferred: Med/Surg experience and willingness to float

Medications & Drips

RNs titrate drips: Yes

Common drips:

• Oxytocin
• Magnesium sulfate

Providers & Support

Obstetrics

• OB physicians are on call
• If oxytocin exceeds 20 mU/min, provider must be readily available

Anesthesia

• CRNAs on call
• 30-minute callback time
• Staff report they have never waited the full 30 minutes

Respiratory

• CPAP available

Monitoring

• Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM): Centricity
• No monitor technicians
• Bedside RN interprets fetal monitoring strips
• Resources available for interpretation assistance
• Telemetry available if needed

Scheduling

• 12-hour shifts (7:00–7:00)
• Traveler schedules managed by leadership
• Grouped scheduling whenever possible
• Scheduling preferences are usually accommodated

Weekend Requirement

Minimum 5 weekend shifts every 6-week schedule

• Days: Saturday and/or Sunday
• Nights: Friday and Saturday
• Additional weekends may be required based on staffing

Holiday Requirement

• Required based on unit needs

Call

• No call or standby requirement

Floating

Required.

If Women's Services census is zero, nurses may float to Med/Surg for tasking such as:

• Answering call lights
• Passing water
• Answering phones
• General support duties

Orientation

• 2 days of unit-specific orientation
• POCT training
• Epic training

Dress Code

• No designated scrub color
• Clean, professional scrubs
• Hospital scrubs may be worn if preferred
