DIRECT HIRE
ASSISTANT NURSE MANAGER
Salary Range: $129,465 – $168,032
Shift: Nights | 8:00 PM–6:00 AM | Monday–Friday
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Experience & Skills
- Minimum of 2 years of relevant acute care experience.
- Previous management or leadership experience preferred.
- Demonstrates basic knowledge of management skills.
- Ability to function as a staff RN.
- Demonstrates excellence in clinical skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Education
- BSN required, or must be matriculated in a BSN program with a plan for graduation within the applicable hospital-approved timeframe.
- BSN enrollment/graduation requirements are subject to hospital policy and approval by the Senior Vice President of Patient Care Services/CNO, where applicable.
License & Certification
- Current New York State RN License.
- BLS certification through the American Heart Association required.
- ACLS certification through the American Heart Association preferred. ACLS is required if it is a requirement for employees within the department being supervised.
- Certification in the area of specialty or CNML (Certified Nurse Manager & Leader) preferred.
- Specialty certification or CNML must be obtained within 3 years of hire.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Role Overview
The Assistant Nurse Manager is responsible for supporting the overall management and operations of the assigned department while maintaining high standards of clinical care, staff performance, patient safety, and regulatory compliance. The role includes staff leadership, scheduling, budgeting, performance improvement, education, and occasional direct patient care.
Responsibilities
Department Management & Leadership
- Participate in interviewing, hiring, evaluating, counseling, and terminating employees in accordance with hospital policy.
- Develop and submit departmental goals and objectives aligned with Nursing and hospital strategic plans.
- Create and maintain a culture of shared governance.
- Provide house supervision as required by the Division of Nursing.
- Conduct monthly staff meetings, communicate departmental updates and concerns, and maintain meeting minutes.
- Utilize multiple communication methods to effectively disseminate information.
- Attend required meetings and participate in committees, task forces, and projects as assigned.
- Submit required reports and documentation to the Division Administrator.
Staffing & Workforce Management
- Schedule staff according to budgeted staffing plans and department needs.
- Continuously update the FTE component of staffing budgets.
- Ensure completion of staff orientation, annual competencies, ongoing education, and required training.
- Attend educational programs and activities to maintain current management and clinical knowledge.
Budget & Operations
- Develop and submit operating and capital budgets and report variances as required.
- Support departmental operational goals while maintaining appropriate resource utilization and cost containment.
- Ensure departmental staffing and operational practices align with organizational requirements.
Quality, Safety & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with governmental and state regulations and accreditation standards.
- Participate in and ensure departmental involvement in Performance Improvement initiatives, including quality metrics, core measures, and patient satisfaction.
- Develop evidence-based standards of care, policies, and procedures for the assigned area.
- Ensure service excellence initiatives are implemented and organizational patient satisfaction goals are achieved.
- Adhere to employee and patient safety standards.
- Integrate patient rights and nursing ethics into daily practice.
- Follow Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goals.
- Delegate activities according to the New York State Nurse Practice Act.
- Adhere to the ANA Code of Nursing Ethics.
- Maintain compliance with hospital standards of care, policies, procedures, behavioral standards, mandatory education, and annual health requirements.
Clinical & Patient Care
- Periodically provide direct patient care as needed.
- Maintain the ability to function as a staff RN.
- Promote high-quality clinical practice and support safe patient care.
- Apply professional nursing standards and ethical principles to patient care and departmental operations.
Magnet & Professional Practice
- Work with the Magnet Program Director to align departmental initiatives with the strategic plan and key components of a Magnet organization.
- Support professional nursing practice standards and organizational initiatives.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
