Description
Position: RN — Medical/Surgical / High-Acuity Rehab
Experience: 1 year minimum
First-time travelers: Yes, with manager approval
Certifications: BLS + NIHSS
Patient ratio: Typically 1:6–7, occasionally 1:7 several times/month
Call: None
Weekend: Every 3rd weekend
Patient Population
Although the unit is mixed adult/pediatric, travelers are not expected to care for pediatric patients.
Common conditions include:
- Traumatic brain injury (TBI)
- Spinal cord injury (SCI)
- Stroke/CVA
- Amputations
- Burns
- Multi-trauma
- Pulmonary patients
- High-acuity rehabilitation patients
This is therefore more acute than a typical rehab assignment.
Required Skills
The skill set is fairly extensive:
- Trach care
- Ventilators
- BiPAP/CPAP
- IVs
- PICCs and central lines
- Wound care
- Bowel programs
- TPN
- Drains/tubes
- Laryngectomy care
- G-tube/PEG tube care and tube feeds
- Pulmonary care
Patients may leave the unit for hemodialysis (HD) or peritoneal dialysis (PD).
Staffing & Support
- PCA/CNA ratio: approximately 1:7–8
- Phlebotomy available, but RNs remain ultimately responsible
- Unit coordinators: 7 AM–11 PM
- MDs, NPs, and residents
- PT/OT/ST
- No traditional bedside monitors
- Vital Sync/OxyNet used for monitoring, with centralized overnight monitoring
Technology
- EMR: Cerner
- IV pumps: Plum 360
- Medication dispensing: Omnicell
Floating
- Staff can float within their scope of practice.
- Floating is distributed among staff, with the Float Pool used primarily.
- Travelers do not care for pediatric patients.
Schedule
- Day: 6:30 AM–7:00 PM
- Night: 6:30 PM–7:00 AM
- Weekend: Every third weekend
- Call: None
- Schedule cycle: Every 6 weeks
- Holidays: Some holiday work expected. For paired holidays such as Thanksgiving/Black Friday or Christmas Eve/Christmas Day, the traveler is assigned one, not both.
- RTO: Manager approval
Orientation
- Monday: Online
- Tuesday: NVCI in person
- Wednesday: Frazier orientation in person
- Remaining orientation hours scheduled during the week
Other
- Scrubs: Galaxy Blue
- Parking: Free, badge-access garage
- Culture: Traveler-friendly; travelers are held to the same standards as staff
