Description

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct nursing care in an 18-bed Emergency Department treating approximately 85–115 patients per day.
  • Maintain a typical nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:4, or 1:2 for ICU-level patients.
  • Perform comprehensive patient assessments, triage, and ongoing monitoring.
  • Care for a diverse ED population, including acute medical conditions, indigent/homeless patients, and correctional patients.
  • Stabilize patients with cardiac conditions and coordinate transfers when higher-level cardiac care is required.
  • Recognize changes in patient condition and initiate appropriate emergency interventions.
  • Administer medications, IV therapies, and other treatments safely according to physician orders.
  • Monitor patients using Phillips telemetry and appropriately respond to changes in cardiac rhythm and patient status.
  • Provide care for patients requiring ventilator support and collaborate with 24/7 respiratory therapy.
  • Work collaboratively with the shift manager, resource nurse, physicians, hospitalists/intensivists, pharmacists, RTs, ED techs, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Use Cerner for accurate and timely documentation of assessments, interventions, medications, and patient responses.
  • Maintain strong teamwork and communication in a high-volume emergency department.
  • Follow hospital policies, infection-control procedures, patient-safety standards, and emergency protocols.
  • Be willing to float between the two affiliated facilities when needed, including mid-shift floating.
  • Provide safe and effective care while adapting to the workflow and patient population of the receiving ED.
  • Work every other weekend and required holidays.
  • Maintain flexibility for the facility's 4-week scheduling requirements; block scheduling and PRN scheduling are not accommodated.
Requirements Current RN license; license must be available for submission. BLS certification required. ACLS certification required. PALS certification required. NIHSS certification required. Emergency Department nursing experience strongly preferred. Strong emergency assessment, prioritization, and critical-thinking skills. Ability to care for patients at a 1:4 ratio, with 1:2 ratios for ICU-level patients. Experience with ventilated patients and emergency stabilization preferred. Must be comfortable working with a diverse patient population, including correctional, homeless, and indigent patients. Must demonstrate excellent teamwork and communication skills. Must be proficient with or able to quickly learn Cerner EMR. Must have open availability and be able to work the facility's assigned schedule. This assignment must be the candidate's primary job; the facility will not work around another employment schedule. Must be willing to work every other weekend. Must be available for 1 major and 1 minor holiday. Must be willing to float between the two facilities approximately 6.5 miles apart. If floated before the shift, approximately 2 hours' notice will be provided; mid-shift floating may also occur. Must wear navy blue scrubs. Scrub jackets must also be navy; undershirts must be navy, white, or black. Must be willing to work 12-hour evening/night/mid shifts, with 1:00 PM starts. Block scheduling is not permitted. Must complete facility-specific orientation: 2 shifts at the primary campus and 1 shift at the other campus.
