Registered Nurse – Operating Rooms

Location

  • Puyallup, Washington
  • Level III Trauma Center
  • 375 Licensed Beds
  • 12 Operating Rooms (11 run daily, 1 hybrid)
  • 40-50 cases per day

Contract Length

  • 13 weeks

Shift Details

  • 12-hour variable day shifts with start times at 06:30, 08:30, or 10:30
  • Occasional weekends as needed
  • Must be available to work 7 days a week unless approved otherwise
  • Breaks for 12-hour shifts: three 15-minute rest breaks and one 30-minute lunch
  • On-call required: 4-6 shifts per 6-week period, including nights (22:30-07:00) and weekends (hours vary)
  • Response time for on-call: 30 minutes
  • No sleep rooms provided

Patient and Case Mix

  • Minimal pediatric cases (typically ENT)
  • Strong experience required in orthopedic, sports medicine, spine, and robotics (DaVinci)
  • Adult cases include ENT (thyroid), general surgery, orthopedic spine, total joint replacement, gynecology, vascular (AV fistula, femoral-popliteal bypass), urology, and podiatry
  • No open heart, transplant, or high-level neurosurgical procedures (e.g., EVDs)

Required Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of acute/inpatient OR experience
  • Candidates with less than 2 years but strong OR experience may be considered with approval
  • Prior travel experience: Not required (first-time travelers not accepted)

Required Certifications and Licenses

  • Registered Nurse license valid in Washington State
  • BLS certification
  • Rhythm exam required prior to arrival

Skills and Responsibilities

  • Circulating nurse role only
  • Experienced in the specified case types above
  • Flexibility, teamwork, reliability, and a positive attitude are essential
  • Floating assignments possible during low census, including inpatient areas such as Medical-Surgical, ICU, PCU, ED Holding, and PACU
  • Floating duties do not include patient assignments or medication administration; tasks include vital signs, sitter duties, stocking, and other basic support functions within RN scope of practice
  • No phones allowed on the unit
  • Scrub color provided

Orientation

  • Day 1: New Employee Orientation and access setup
  • Unit orientation for the remainder of the first week
  • Epic training begins on Thursday

Charting and Systems

  • Epic (required for certain roles such as CAP backfills/preceptors)
  • Alaris infusion pumps
  • Pyxis medication dispensing system

Additional Requirements

  • COVID-19 vaccination required
  • Must comply with all standard background checks, immunizations, and competency verifications as per facility policy
