Medical Surgical Registered Nurse

Overview

  • Location: Wilmington, North Carolina
  • Employment type: Travel/Contract
  • Shift: Night, 3x12 hours, 18:45–07:15
  • Hours per week: 36
  • Contract length: 13 weeks
  • Patient ratio: 1:5–6
  • Weekend requirement: Every other weekend
  • Floating: Similar units and alternate care locations with inpatients holding

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in North Carolina
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Med Surg (2 years of experience)
  • Med Surg experience within the last year
  • BLS issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement
  • Must be able to take heparin drips
  • Experience with Epic

Key Clinical Skills

  • PCA
  • Colostomy care
  • Feeding tube care and management
  • Blood product administration
  • Central line care/management
  • Peripheral line care/management
  • Phlebotomy
  • PICC line management
  • IV starts
  • Management of dysrhythmias
  • O2 protocol management
  • Non-invasive airway management
  • Isolation precautions/PPE
  • Traumatic brain injury care
  • Ortho trauma care
  • Surgical drains
  • Chest tubes
  • Nasal cannula
  • Oral suctioning
  • Tracheostomy management
  • Wound care

Preferred Qualifications

  • ACLS
  • Interpretation of dysrhythmias
  • Pre/post hemodialysis management
  • Management of drips
  • CVA experience
  • Pre/post neuro surgery experience
  • Spinal cord injury experience

Unit Notes

  • Must be comfortable with the stated patient ratios
  • Assigned to storm team and/or hurricane team as needed
  • May be required to report during catastrophic events, mass casualty incidents, or disasters
  • Consolidation to a centralized office may occur mid-contract
  • Navy scrubs

Orientation

  • 12-hour unit orientation
  • 16-hour organizational education

Patient Population

  • Severe bone, joint, and soft tissue injuries
  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Spine injuries and pain
  • Neurological trauma/nerve damage
  • Subdural hematoma
