Registered Nurse – Critical Care Unit

Location: Middletown, Connecticut
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Unit & Patient Care Details

• Unit size: 24 beds
• Nurse-to-patient ratios:

  • General: 1:2
  • High acuity: 1:1
  • Intermediate Care Unit (IMCU) Days: 1:3
  • IMCU Nights: 1:4
• Common patient diagnoses: CVA with TPA, AAA, MI (diagnostic cath lab only), Hypertension, Overdose, Alcohol detox, Precedex detox, Whipple’s procedure, GI bleed, ECOS, external temporary pacers, A-fib with RVR, septic shock
• Patient population includes high acuity homeless, substance abuse, and mental health patients
• Nurses float to telemetry or IMCU with possible 1:5 ratio

Work Schedule & Orientation

• Shift: Nights, 12-hour shifts starting at 7 PM
• Weekend requirement: Every other weekend
• Holiday requirement: Every other holiday
• Orientation: 2 shifts floor-specific orientation

Certifications & Licensure

• Required certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
• Must have Epic EMR experience
• Prior travel nursing experience is required

Clinical & Technical Skills

• Ability to read and interpret cardiac monitor strips (Phillips IntelliVue system)
• Experience with titrating all drips
• Ventilator experience: Avea vents; RT support available in ICU; IMCU uses BiPAP
• Able to draw ABGs (Respiratory Therapists available 24/7)
• IV team available 7 AM–8:30 PM; nurses must attempt IVs first; nurse resource available 24/7 for IV help
• Pharmacy available on unit during the day
• Charge nurse duties expected but should try to avoid patient assignments when possible

Additional Requirements & Notes

• Must be a strong team player, flexible, empathetic, and possess strong customer service skills
• Must be able to start on designated orientation dates with minimal or no return-to-office (RTO) within first two weeks
• Cannot hold another job while on this assignment
• Scrub color: Caribbean blue tops (black or white shirts allowed underneath), pants may be black or Caribbean blue
• Smart room technology and ceiling lifts in use
