Registered Nurse - NICU

Location: Madison, Wisconsin
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Shift: Day/Night, 12-hour shifts (7:00am-7:30pm, 7:00pm-7:30am)
  • Schedule: Monday through Friday, with 2-3 weekends required per 6-week scheduling period
  • Patient Population: Level III/IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
  • Experience Required:
    • Minimum 2 years total NICU III/IV experience
    • At least 1 full year must be in Level IV NICU
    • Level III and Level IV experience can be combined to meet the 2-year total
  • Clinical Skills:
    • Experience with post-operative patients
    • G-tube care
    • Trach/ventilator management
    • Various modes of invasive and noninvasive ventilation

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Wisconsin
  • Minimum 2 years of Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) experience, including experience within the last year
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Experience with post-operative patients
  • Experience with G-tube care
  • Experience managing tracheostomy and ventilator care
  • Experience with various modes of invasive and noninvasive ventilation

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • Background check within 90 days prior to start, including multi-location search for past 7 years
  • Education verification as applicable
  • State-specific caregiver screening (Wisconsin BID Form) required within 90 days of start
  • Physical exam (to meet agency standard, not facility required)
  • Immunizations and health documents including:
    • Tdap vaccination proof (one dose from adulthood required)
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray with appropriate follow-up if positive
    • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccination or titers, with medical/religious exemptions accepted
    • Varicella vaccination or titer, with exemptions accepted
    • Hepatitis B vaccination series or declination form
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption (required annually during flu season)
    • Drug screening per agency standards

Testing & Competency

  • Pediatric Telemetry Test (WorkRamp) required prior to start and updated annually
  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exams as applicable
  • Pass/Fail testing for EKG/Medication as required by specialty
  • Orientation safety manual acknowledgment
  • Rhythm interpretation remediation course may be required if telemetry test attempts fail

Additional Notes

  • Two clinical references within the last 3 years required (agency standard)
  • Employment application and annual skills checklist required
  • Photo for badge must meet specific guidelines (passport-style, no headwear except for religious/medical reasons)

This position is ideal for experienced NICU RNs with strong Level IV NICU skills, comfortable with complex ventilator and post-op care, and able to work a flexible schedule including weekends.
