Registered Nurse (ED - RN)

Location: Norfolk, Nebraska
Contract Length: 8 weeks

Unit & Environment

• Emergency Department (ED) / ER with Level 3 trauma designation, stroke and STEMI certified
• 11 beds plus 1 trauma bed; travelers may be placed in trauma rooms
• No separate fast track or psych/seclusion rooms; patients intermixed
• Separate triage area in lobby using ESI rating system; travelers can triage
• Security present on campus 24/7, office near ER lobby
• Average patient volume: 50-55 patients per day
• Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:3 in main ER, 1:2 for ICU acuity patients
• Small town feel with some nurses having 20+ years tenure
• Unit layout: L-shaped

Schedule & Shifts

• Primarily night shifts with occasional mid-shifts during the week
• 3x12 hour shifts every other week (EOW)
• Shift times include: 6a-6p, 9a-9p, 11a-11p, 6p-6a
• Weekend requirement: every 3rd weekend (Friday, Saturday, Sunday), night shift
• Holiday requirement: every other observed holiday (Easter, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's)
• No call or standby requirement
• Self-scheduling used; travelers sign up after core staff; schedule balanced by manager
• Typical schedule posted 8+ weeks in advance

Required Certifications & Skills

• BLS (AHA or ARC)
• ACLS
• PALS
• ENPC
• TNCC
• CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention)
• Must have at least 1 year of Emergency Room nursing experience
• Ability to independently read and interpret telemetry monitors (Phillips brand)
• Team player with strong communication skills
• Comfortable with first-time travelers
• Preferred experience in rural or community hospital settings

Clinical & Patient Care Information

• Common patient diagnoses: chest pain, abdominal pain, diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), sepsis, headaches, mental health issues, respiratory distress, shortness of breath, trauma (including ground-level falls on blood thinners, motor vehicle accidents, farming accidents), some pediatric patients
• Common critical care drips used: nitroglycerin, levophed, insulin, cardizem
• Respiratory therapy available on call; RNs perform breathing treatments
• Respiratory equipment includes vents, BiPAP, CPAP, high flow nasal cannula; pediatric patients needing higher oxygen support are transferred
• Imaging (X-ray, CT) located just outside ER doors; transport available
• Phlebotomy draws labs; RNs draw labs from IV starts; phlebotomy handles redraws and blood cultures
• Nurse aids, paramedics, and CNAs assist with IV removal, vitals, triage, transportation, EKGs, etc.

Orientation & Training

• Unit-specific orientation includes 1 day of Epic electronic health record training
• 1-2 shifts with a preceptor
