Registered Nurse (Med Surg) - Travel Assignment

Location: Wilson, North Carolina
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 12-hour shifts (7 AM - 7 PM)
Weekly Hours: 36 hours
Weekend Hours: Every other weekend
Call Requirements: None


Unit & Patient Population

  • Med Surg units on 3rd and 5th floors
  • 22 beds per unit
  • Patient ratio: 6:1 up to 7:1
  • Patient population includes adult and geriatric patients
  • Common diagnoses/treatments: surgical cases, hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis exchanges, placement, psychiatric cases
  • Equipment: Telemetry monitors
  • Electronic Health Record system: MEDITECH

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina
  • Minimum 2 years of Med Surg nursing experience, including experience within the last year
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Experience with MEDITECH Electronic Health Record system

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous Med Surg experience

  • Orientation occurs bi-weekly
  • Must be able to schedule float shifts to meet unit needs

Pros

Doctors and most of staff are nice. Surgeries are not hard.

Cons

No staff so a lot of call. You will be on call within your first week or two, even if you don't know how to do anything. Unorganized. The director and supervisor don't know anything about the OR nor are they helpful. New staff are not properly trained. Everything falls on the OR nurse to do. They preop in house patients getting surgery. A couple of OR staff are bullies and lazy, they all think they are the boss. They tell the charge nurse what they are going to do and not going to do. Its like high school all over. Had to leave out of fear for my license.
