Registered Nurse (MedSurg/Oncology) - Omaha, Nebraska

Job Details

  • Specialty: Medical Surgical / Oncology
  • Contract Length: 13 weeks
  • Shift: Nights
  • Hours: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours per shift (36 hours/week)
  • Unit Beds: 21
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:5
  • Weekend Requirement: Every 3rd weekend
  • Holiday Requirement: Rotating holidays
  • Call/Standby: None
  • Floating: Rare; only to other medical/surgical units if needed
  • Dress Code: Navy scrubs
  • Orientation: Unit/department specific orientation provided

Unit Environment & Patient Population

  • Fast-paced medical surgical oncology unit focused on post-tumor surgical intervention patients (e.g., prostatectomy, mastectomy)
  • Most patients are general medical/surgical with oncology specialty
  • Central monitoring with RNs responsible for noticing changes on telemetry
  • Charge nurse and house supervisor roles present
  • Nurse aides available sometimes, depending on sitter needs (ratio approx. 1:15)
  • No chemotherapy administration required for travelers due to competency requirements

Required Certifications & Skills

  • Certifications: BLS (AHA) required
  • Must pass a skills exam during orientation with a minimum score of 90% (open book, resources provided)
  • Valid driver’s license required at submission
  • Artificial nails prohibited in all patient care areas; refusal to comply results in contract termination

Experience & Qualifications

  • Orthopedic and medical surgical experience preferred
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a team nursing model
  • Demonstrated flexibility and resilience in stressful situations
  • Commitment to personal and professional development, safe work environment, and collaborative nursing practice
  • Experience with accurate documentation, timeliness, and patient-centered care
  • Ability to titrate drips including heparin, lidocaine, and TPN

Additional Information

  • Radius rule: Candidates must live within 50 miles and cannot be currently employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with any related facilities within the system
  • No prior travel experience explicitly required
