Registered Nurse – Stepdown Unit (Travel/Contract)

Location: Cleveland, Ohio
Shift: Night shift (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM), 3 shifts per week (3x12-hour shifts)
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Work primarily on a Stepdown unit with potential to float to similar patient care units including Emergency Department and other stepdown/PCU units.
  • Must work at least every other holiday.
  • Orientation includes passing an ECG rhythm recognition test and a medication administration exam (SafeMedicate).

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Ohio.
  • Minimum 1.5 years of Stepdown experience, with Stepdown experience within the last year.
  • Current certifications required:
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) – AHA or American Red Cross
    • BLS (Basic Life Support) – AHA or American Red Cross
    • NIH Stroke Scale Certification (NIHSS) – AHA or equivalent (must be updated annually)
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Government-issued photo ID (e.g., Driver’s License or State ID) must be carried on assignment.
  • Background check including FCRA-compliant 7-year search, education verification, and fingerprinting (FBI and BCI) completed within 12 months and updated annually. Fingerprinting must be done under nursing code 4723.09. Facility will also conduct fingerprinting onsite.
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start date confirming ability to safely perform job functions. Latex allergy notification required if applicable.
  • Fit mask test (N95) within 12 months, updated annually. Religious or medical exemptions require approval.
  • Immunizations and health screenings required:
    • Tdap vaccine every 10 years (no declinations accepted)
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray with annual TB questionnaire if history positive
    • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccinations or positive titers with boosters if needed
    • Hepatitis B titer, series, or declination (agency-approved exemptions accepted)
    • Varicella vaccinations or positive titer with booster if needed
    • Seasonal flu vaccination/documentation required annually (no declinations accepted; exemptions require agency approval)
  • Drug screening: Standard 10-panel drug screen within 12 months, updated annually (instant drug screens not accepted).
  • Eye exam (Snellen) within 1 year of start date.

Orientation & Training

  • Completion of facility-specific online training modules prior to start is mandatory. Modules must be completed on a computer using Google Chrome; cannot be completed on a phone.
  • Modules include safety, medication administration, and ECG interpretation preparation.
  • Candidates with less than 6 months gap between contracts at this facility may be exempt from some orientation testing.

References & Employment History

  • Two professional references required from employment within the last year, preferably from a manager, supervisor, or charge nurse.
  • Employment application must include at least 3 years of prior work history with a minimum of 2 years clinical practice in an acute care setting relevant to the assignment.

Additional Notes

  • Candidates must pass baseline competency exams during orientation: medication administration (90% passing score) and ECG interpretation (80% passing score). Retakes and remediation are provided if needed.
  • Candidates starting extension contracts must have all required documentation and clearances updated and on file prior to extension.
  • Prior travel experience is accepted but not explicitly required.
