Registered Nurse - Labor & Delivery

Location: Farmington, New Mexico
Employment Type: Travel
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights (7 PM - 7 AM)
Weekly Hours: 36 (weekend hours vary)
Call Requirements: None


Facility & Unit Overview

  • Level III trauma center with 198 beds
  • Labor and Delivery unit with 17 beds and 2 triage rooms
  • Patient population: Adults and newborns
  • Approximately 75 deliveries per month
  • Equipment includes fetal monitors, ISTAT, and Freestyle
  • Electronic Health Records: Cerner and Fetalink
  • Unit specialty: Labor & Delivery, Level 2 Special Care Nursery (SCN), and Postpartum
  • Patient ratios follow AWHONN standards

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in New Mexico
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Minimum 2 years of Labor and Delivery experience, including experience within the last year
  • Experience working with infant patients
  • Experience in charge nurse roles
  • Experience with cervical exams
  • Postpartum experience
  • Nursery experience
  • Certifications:
    • BLS issued by American Heart Association
    • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
    • ACLS (American Heart Association)

Preferred Skills & Experience

  • Fetal monitoring
  • Stabilization of neonates
  • Troubleshooting high acuity situations
  • Strong triage assessment skills

Common Diagnoses/Treatments Encountered

  • Labor
  • Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM)
  • Hypertension
  • Intrauterine Growth Restriction (IUGR)
  • Macrosomia
  • Drug use in pregnancy

Pros

Unit is comprised of many travelers. Core staff and travelers have all been fantastic! The unit is set up quite well to manage the surges of patients. It is the only main hospital around so it can definitely provide good experience. Most of the providers I've encountered over the last couple months actually listen to the nurses and are easy to work with.

Cons

It is definitely busy before the size of the town. I can't say I have any other cons.
