Job Opportunity: Labor and Delivery/Postpartum RN

Location: Ithaca, New York
Employment Type: Long-Term Assignment (13 weeks)
Shift: 6:45 PM – 7:15 AM


Job Summary

  • Provide direct patient care within the Maternal Child Health department.
  • Collaborate with unit leadership and follow nursing scope of practice guidelines relevant to Maternal Child Health.
  • Assess patients and families with needs ranging from uncomplicated to highly complex.
  • Use person-centered care to develop and prioritize care plans.
  • Demonstrate critical thinking in clinical decision-making and problem-solving.
  • Perform technical nursing skills competently and stay current with policies and procedures.
  • Act as a resource to peers and facilitate coordination with other disciplines and services.
  • Labor and Delivery experience is required; postpartum experience is preferred.
  • Floating to other hospital departments (outside Maternal Child Health) on a rotational basis is expected.
  • Scheduling is based on unit needs; weekend maximums are not guaranteed, and specific day requests may not be accommodated. Block scheduling may be considered but is not guaranteed.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in New York.
  • Minimum of 2 years of Labor and Delivery experience, with at least some experience within the last year.
  • BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross, current and valid throughout assignment.
  • Current NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) certification.
  • Current AWHONN/Fetal Heart Monitoring certification.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing or Associate Degree in Nursing.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Health & Safety Requirements

  • COVID-19 vaccine proof or agency declination (optional).
  • MMR: Positive IgG titer or 2 vaccine series required; titers must show results for Measles, Mumps, and Rubella individually. If negative/equivocal, vaccination documentation required.
  • Varicella: Positive IgG titer or 2 vaccine series required; vaccination documentation required if titer negative/equivocal.
  • Tdap: Must be current within the last 10 years or have a specific declination form.
  • Hepatitis B: Positive antibody titer, 3 vaccine series, or specific declination form required.
  • TB Test: Must have one of the following within required timeframes:
    • Two PPD skin tests (one within 12 months, one within 3 months), or
    • One Quantiferon/Spot test within 12 months.
    • Past positive TB requires chest x-ray within 12 months.
  • Annual Fit Test for respiratory protection within the last 12 months, completed prior to start. On-site fit testing available if needed.
  • Physical/Health Statement within the past 12 months confirming clearance with no restrictions, including vitals and vision screening.
  • Drug Screen: 9+ panel excluding marijuana (testing for marijuana is prohibited and results including it will be rejected).

Documentation & Verification

  • Submission of a detailed resume accounting for all employment and gaps in the last 7 years, including education history with degree titles and graduation dates.
  • Two professional references: one supervisor reference from the last 12 months and one supervisor or peer reference from the last 3 years.
  • Verification of most recent employment.
  • Completion of background checks including national and county criminal searches covering all counties lived and worked in the last 7 years.
  • Valid US driver’s license or state ID (not expired).
  • Color headshot photo (professional, no filters, JPEG format).
  • Signed and dated job description and other required agency forms and acknowledgments.
  • Completion of agency-specific self-study packets, quizzes, and code of conduct acknowledgments.
  • Completion of a pharmacology exam.

Additional Information

  • Floating to other hospital departments outside of Maternal Child Health (such as OR/PACU, NICU) is part of the role on a rotational basis.
  • Scheduling is unit-driven with limited flexibility; weekend shifts and specific day requests may not be accommodated.
  • Prior travel experience is not explicitly required.
