Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (RN) – Neuro Acute Epilepsy Monitoring (6N)
Location: Phoenix, Arizona
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit & Facility Overview
- Unit: Neuro Acute 6NNA/B
- Total Beds: 48 (including 10 epilepsy specialty rooms)
- Teaching hospital with nursing students
- Level 1 Trauma center
- Associated with a nationally recognized neuro institute
- Hospitalist or Intensivist present during day shifts
- 24/7 Respiratory Therapy and Pharmacy support
- IV Team (SWAT RN) available for difficult IV sticks
Shift & Scheduling
- Shift Length: 12-hour shifts (7am-7pm)
- Ratios: 1:4 nurse-to-patient ratio for both day and night shifts
- Charge Nurse role available (no patient assignment)
- Nurse Aides/PCTs: 1-2 on days, 1 at night
- Weekend Requirement: 3 shifts every 4 weeks (self-scheduling)
- Holidays: Work included in holiday rotation
- Possible floating to Med Surg/Telemetry floors
- Floor-specific orientation: 2 shifts on the unit
Patient Population & Care Focus
- Common Diagnoses: Epilepsy, brain tumors, subdural hematoma, scoliosis surgeries, traumatic brain injury (TBI), various neuro diagnoses
- Care includes 24-48 hour Trend EEG monitoring
- Telemetry mainly MedSurg with some Telemetry required
- Ventilation: Bipap managed by RT
Required Qualifications & Certifications
- Registered Nurse (RN) license required
- Minimum 2 years of experience in specialty (Neuro Acute Epilepsy Monitoring or related MedSurg/Telemetry with strong neuro skills)
- Level 1 Trauma experience required
- BLS and ACLS certifications required
- BSN preferred
- Med Surg/Telemetry certification preferred
- Strong critical thinking and assessment skills essential, including ability to detect subtle patient changes and assess cranial nerves
- Must be competent in Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes (SIMs Lab pass/fail on Day 1 of orientation)
- Must pass Prophecy Dysrhythmia Exam 24-48 hours prior to acceptance (max 2 attempts)
- No facial piercings and only natural hair colors allowed
- Men must be clean-shaven for fit testing
Additional Requirements & Notes
- Prior travel experience required for ED and Neuro ICU roles
- Candidates cannot hold multiple contracts simultaneously within this system
- Must have own vehicle if part of a travel team
- Strict onboarding deadlines; all documentation must be complete before start date
- Day 1 orientation includes pass/fail SIMs Lab for sterile technique and nursing skills
- Use of self-releasing velcro seat belts (not restraints) on unit
- Weekend and holiday coverage required as part of scheduling
This position is ideal for experienced Neuro Acute care RNs with trauma experience who are comfortable working in a fast-paced, teaching hospital environment and have prior travel experience.
