Position Details

Specialty: Registered Nurse (RN)

Unit: A3 West Medical Surgical Telemetry
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Unit Information

Number of Beds: 38
Staffing:
- Day Shift: 1 charge RN, 6-7 RNs, 1 LPN, 3 PCTs, 1 unit secretary
- Night Shift: 1 charge RN, 6 RNs, 1 LPN, 2-3 PCTs, HUC part-time
Patient Ratios:
- Day: 6:1 (charge nurse assists outside staffing)
- Night: 7:1
Equipment Used: Baxter IV pumps, wound vacs, SCDS, prima-fits, primo-fits
Electronic Medical Record (EMR): Cerner Powerchart

Required Skills and Experience

Minimum Specialty Experience: 2 years in medical/surgical nursing
Must Have:
- Medical/surgical nursing experience
- Telemetry experience
Preferred:
- Charge nurse experience
Typical Procedures:
- Peripheral IV starts
- Dressing changes
- Other standard medical-surgical skills

Certifications Required

Basic Life Support (BLS)

Work Environment and Culture

Personality Fit:
- Team player

- Willingness to help others proactively
Floating Areas: Other medical surgical units, ED holding medical/surgical patients
Dress Code: Navy or white scrubs (all navy, all white, or white top with navy pants)

Scheduling

Weekends: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule
Travelers float before permanent staff

Pros

Lots of other travelers, nice approachable management that are on the floor in scrubs to help not criticize, updated cerner launch point, staff helps other staff, security is able to protect staff, PD is at hospital

Cons

Charge is only available to help with traumas otherwise they sit at their desk, techs assign pts to ER rooms making very heavy patient loads with multiple traumas with other nurse assignments being very light, not enough policies to protect nurses from verbal and physical violence from patients
