Unit

  • Unit: ER/ED
  • Beds: 24 beds, including 4 behavioral health rooms and 2 critical care rooms
  • Fast Track: 9-chair vertical flow area
  • Triage: Separate triage area; travelers do triage
  • Psych/seclusion rooms: 4 behavioral health safe rooms
  • Security: In-house 24/7
  • Patient volume: 70–80 patients per day
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio: 4:1

Required Qualifications

  • BLS
  • ACLS
  • PALS
  • NIHSS
  • Ability to function in a fast-paced department with fewer resources than large teaching or trauma facilities
  • Must be adept with EPIC
  • Compact license required for floating between campuses in Tennessee

Preferred

  • Ideally worked in smaller, fast-paced facilities

Clinical Setting

  • STEMI and stroke receiving facility; trauma cases are transferred out
  • No trauma designation
  • No OB services
  • Occasional precipitous delivery
  • Common patient types include chest pain, abdominal pain, shortness of breath, and uncontrolled diabetes
  • High-acuity patient population
  • Rarely boards patients; transfers many patients due to criticality

Responsibilities / Workflow

  • RN draws labs
  • RN may need to troubleshoot RT equipment
  • RN reads telemetry strips
  • RT is in the ER 24/7 and performs ABGs, breathing treatments, and EKGs
  • X-ray/CT transport is handled by radiology unless stroke alert or critical care requiring 1:1 RN
  • Charge nurse is present 24/7 and may occasionally take patients, mainly behavioral health patients
  • PCTs are staffed each shift and can transport patients and perform phlebotomy
  • Travelers may be asked to help cover holidays unless negotiated in contract

Scheduling / Floating

  • Weekend coverage may be required depending on shift
  • Floating between three campuses is possible, but expected to be infrequent
  • No call or standby requirement
  • Self-scheduling is used for local staff; traveler scheduling is not guaranteed
  • Orientation includes two 8-hour hospital orientation shifts and two 12-hour clinical in-unit orientation shifts with a preceptor

Dress Code

  • Navy blue
  • Plain or branded sweatshirts allowed
  • No hoodies
