Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical

Location: Kalamazoo, Michigan
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Job Overview

• Must be available for the first two weeks of the assignment.
• Weekend requirement: every other weekend.
• Holiday requirement: as needed (no holiday time off requests; dates may be discussed with manager).
• No call requirement.
• Will float to Medical/Surgical (MS), Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and Emergency Department (ED) waiting areas to take MS patients as needed.
• Patient ratio typically 1:6, may flex to 1:7 with additional support staff on site.

Requirements/Qualifications

• Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Michigan
• Minimum 1.5 years of Medical-Surgical and Telemetry nursing experience, including experience within the last year
• Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
• National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
• Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
• Competency in pre/post hemodialysis management
• PICC line management skills
• Patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) experience
• Chest tube management (Emerson/Pleur-evac)
• High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC) oxygen delivery
• Non-invasive airway management
• Experience with portable oxygen tanks
• Tracheostomy management

Required Documentation & Compliance

• Government-issued photo ID (Driver’s License or State ID).
• E-Verify completion as per contract requirements.
• Proof of name change if applicable (legal documentation).
• Criminal background check within 45 days of start, including lifetime search from age 18, with multiple components (SSN trace, national/statewide searches, education verification, MVR, etc.).
• Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks.
• Michigan LARA fingerprinting required within 45 days of start for certain positions/units.
• Education verification (copy of highest degree or diploma).
• Physical exam within 1 year of start.
• Drug testing: 10-panel including Marijuana/THC within 30 days of start.
• Immunizations and health requirements:

  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (proof of at least one prior Tdap vaccine).
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 30 days of start.
  • Annual TB questionnaire.
  • Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: 2 vaccines or positive titer required.
  • Hepatitis B: titer, series, or facility declination.
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption (medical/spiritual) required for candidates starting after November 1.
• Fit mask testing required on-site (Honeywell DC365N95HC) for acute care roles.
• Completion of medication/pharmacology competency exam and specialty competency exam within 1 year prior to assignment start (passing score ≥ 80%).
• Review and sign facility Code of Conduct and Appearance Standards Policy.
• Completion of orientation safety manual acknowledgment.
• Professional reference from a supervisor or manager required.
• Complete employment application/resume with full 7 years work history, no gaps.

Additional Notes

• Prior travel experience is not explicitly required.
• Floating to other units may be necessary.
• Candidates must be comfortable with patient ratios and flexible staffing.
• Holiday time off requests are generally not allowed but may be discussed with management.
• All documentation and compliance requirements must be met prior to or at the start of the assignment.

This position is ideal for experienced Medical-Surgical RNs with strong post-surgical skills who are comfortable working night shifts and floating between units as needed.
