Certified Surgical Technologist

Overview

• Contract role in Brewster, Washington
• Monday–Friday, 7:00am–3:30pm
• 40 hours per week
• Hours may vary based on case load

Role Summary

• Responsible for surgical patient care in the operating room
• Also includes sterile processing responsibilities for surgical equipment and supplies

Required Qualifications

• Valid Certified Surgical Technologist license in Washington
• Certified Surgical Technologist (2 years of experience)
• Certified Surgical Technologist experience within the last year
• BLS
• CST or NBSTSA

Preferred Qualifications

• Certification as a Central Supply Technician

Schedule Expectations

• Willing to work different shifts, take call, and work weekends as scheduling demands

Key Duties

• Prepare instrument sets and other instrumentation based on the planned surgery and surgeon preferences
• Check the room for necessary equipment
• Scrub, gown, and glove self and other team members
• Drape the patient or assist the surgeon with draping
• Handle instruments correctly and ensure proper functioning
• Maintain proper sterile technique in the OR
• Count sponges and sharps with the Circulating Nurse at required points
• Assist with table and room clean-up before and after procedures
• Act as first assistant to the surgeon as needed
• Retract tissue, cut sutures, sponge blood from the wound, or irrigate the wound as needed
• Properly identify and preserve specimens received during surgery
• Keep the OR Supervisor informed of progress and changes in the OR, instrumentation, and equipment
• Notify staff of surgery schedule changes
• Assist in orientation, training, and education of personnel
• Teach and direct other personnel assigned to work under their direction
• Restock department supplies according to inventory levels
• Report servicing and maintenance needs of surgical equipment and instrumentation
• Know procedures for transporting and receiving preoperative patients
• Continue expanding surgical technology knowledge through journals, study, in-services, and approved conferences
• Attend departmental staff meetings
• Respect patient privacy and confidentiality
• Follow chain of command and report pertinent information to the department supervisor

Sterile Processing Responsibilities

• Clean and properly care for surgical equipment used in the operating room
• Check equipment for leaks, broken or loose parts, or other defects
• Purge waste from equipment and clean and sterilize tools according to protocols
• Organize inventory and ensure stock for procedures
• Stock and inventory crash carts
• Distribute instruments within the hospital to the surgery department and other appropriate areas
• Run autoclaves and other sterilization tools
• Operate and monitor steam autoclaves, sonic washers, and other sterilizing equipment
• Organize surgical instrument trays
• Record sterilizer test results
