Job Opportunity: Medical Surgical Oncology Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: Columbus, Ohio
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 16 weeks


Job Description

  • Work on a mixed acuity PCU and Medical-Surgical unit specializing in oncology and bone marrow transplant (BMT).
  • Patient diagnoses include various hematologic malignancies and disorders such as:
    • Acute and Chronic Leukemias (ALL, AML, CLL, CML)
    • Amyloidosis, Aplastic Anemia
    • Hodgkin’s and Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma
    • Multiple Myeloma, Myelodysplastic Syndrome, Myeloproliferative Disorders
  • Special procedures include:
    • Autologous, Syngeneic, and Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplants
    • CAR-T Therapy
  • Shift: Night shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM to 7:30 AM)
  • Rotating 12-hour day/night shifts possible depending on department needs; shift assignments reviewed every 4 weeks but not guaranteed.

Required Experience & Skills

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio.
  • Minimum 1 year of Hematology/Oncology nursing experience within the last year.
  • Medical-Surgical nursing experience.
  • Experience with EPIC electronic medical record system.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement.

Required Certifications

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Preferred Certifications

  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
  • Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) Chemotherapy Certification (not required)

Required Licensure

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license for Ohio.

Background & Compliance Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including SS trace, counties lived/worked, nationwide check, sex offender registry, and motor vehicle record if driving is required.
  • FBI and BCI fingerprinting required within 1 year of start using specific code (3701.881). New fingerprinting required if break in service exceeds 90 days or results are older than 1 year.
  • Education verification from an accredited nursing program (CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA).
  • Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG monitoring.
  • Pending background check attestation required if fingerprint results are pending at start.
  • Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug test within 3 months of start (includes amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cannabinoids, cocaine, methadone, methaqualone, opiates, PCP, propoxyphene). New travelers cannot start with pending drug screen.
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and free of contagious disease.
  • Immunizations and health documents required:
    • Tdap (adult dose after age 11/12)
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year, or TB questionnaire
    • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) - 2 vaccines or positive titer with boosters if low titer
    • Varicella - 2 vaccines or positive titer (medical exemptions require documentation)
    • Hepatitis B titer or 3-vaccine series (declination acceptable)
    • Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season (10/1 - 3/31) with mask requirement if declined
  • COVID-19 vaccination not required but strongly recommended.

Competency Requirements

  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam prior to start.
  • Unit-specific competency exam required.
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 1 year of start and updated annually (minimum passing score 76%). Remediation process available for failed attempts.

References & Documentation

  • Two professional references required; at least one must be from a manager/director or formal leadership role. Charge RN acceptable as second reference.
  • Employment application required including education details.
  • Skills checklist required.

Additional Facility Policies

  • Annual review and acknowledgment of dress code and hand hygiene policies.
  • Annual acknowledgment of ethics and compliance policies.
  • Confidential Fraud, Waste, and Abuse reporting training and form required prior to start and updated annually.

Pros

Units are nice, staff are kind. Single patient rooms with 4:1 ratios day and night on med surg.

Cons

Scheduled every weekend, floated for the first 6 weeks of contract every shift. Not traveler friendly even though they say they are. Staff are treated well not travelers.
