Job Summary

Seeking an experienced Registered Nurse for a Neuro Intensive Care Unit with a strong focus on stroke and neuro critical care patients. This is a travel/contract position requiring specialized neuro ICU skills and experience.


Patient Population & Unit Details

  • Comprehensive Stroke Center
  • Patient diagnoses include ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes (SAH), subdural hematomas, craniotomies, carotid stents and endarterectomies, aneurysm coiling/clipping, seizures, depth electrodes, myasthenia gravis
  • Use of drains: External Ventricular Drains (EVDs), Lumbar Drains (LDs), hemovacs, Camino (ICP monitoring)
  • Special equipment includes EVD, Lumbar Drains, Camino, LICOX, NICOM, Arctic Sun
  • Average daily census: 11-12 patients
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio: 2:1 (may flex to 3:1 during high census; nurse must be comfortable with this)

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in North Carolina
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Minimum 2 years ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience, with ICU experience within the last year
  • One completed travel assignment; not a first-time traveler (unit will not accept first-time travelers)
  • Certifications:
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
    • BLS (Basic Life Support) issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
    • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Skills and clinical competencies:
    • Ventilator management and care of ventilated patients
    • Interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
    • Blood product administration
    • Central line care and management
    • Continuous IV sedation
    • Post-neurosurgery management

Work Schedule & Requirements

  • 12-hour night shifts (18:45 - 07:15)
  • 36 hours per week (3 shifts)
  • Weekend requirement: every other weekend
  • Float requirement: yes
  • Call requirement: none
  • Orientation: 24 hours (2 days or 2 nights)
  • Scrubs: Navy blue & white

Testing & Competencies

  • Must pass EKG/Dysrhythmia competency exam with a minimum score of 82% (3 attempts allowed with remediation process)
  • Medication/pharmacology competency exam as applicable
  • Color blindness testing within 1 year prior to start
  • Must pass EKG testing prior to start

Compliance & Background Checks

  • Background checks required within 90 days of start, including:
    • Local county, federal court, national criminal database, DOJ sex offender search
    • Education verification for highest degree earned specific to nursing profession
  • Drug screening required within 30 days of start (10-panel, negative result)
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start (30 days if past positive TB)
  • Fit mask testing required (N95 or PAPR training acceptable)
  • Immunizations and titers required:
    • Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella (titer or 2 vaccines with boosters if needed)
    • Hepatitis B titer or facility-specific declination form
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption (mask required if exempt)
  • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within required timeframes
  • TB questionnaire if past positive TB, signed by physician within 30 days of start and updated annually

Documentation & Facility Requirements

  • Employment application and skills checklist as applicable
  • Confidentiality agreement, hospital policies acknowledgment, and other facility-specific documents must be signed prior to start
  • Photo for badge required immediately after signing contract (passport style, white background, business attire)
  • Completion of facility-specific education modules and annual compliance training
  • Corp ID and I-Learn account setup required prior to start (must log in within 24 hours of password creation and provide proof)

Additional Notes

  • No Return to Origin (RTO) allowed after booking; call-offs or additional RTO may result in cancellation
  • Must be comfortable with flexible nurse-to-patient ratios during high census
  • Strong neuro ICU experience is mandatory; candidates without this should not be submitted
  • Unit uses Pyxis, EPIC, and SBAR systems
