Job Opportunity: Stepdown Cardiac Nurse (Travel/Contract)
Location
- Arlington, Virginia
Job Description
- Work on a Cardiovascular Unit specializing in cardiac surgery patients transitioning from ICU.
- Unit type: Cardiac Telemetry/Stepdown.
- Responsibilities include managing chest tubes and dysrhythmias.
- Experience with cardiovascular stepdown (CVSD) patients and telemetry required.
- Schedule: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (Day shift: 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM).
- Work every other weekend.
- Contract length: 13 weeks.
- Start date: ASAP, dependent on EPIC training schedule.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Virginia.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
- Minimum 2 years of cardiac stepdown nursing experience, including experience within the last year.
- Experience managing chest tubes and dysrhythmias.
- Telemetry monitoring experience.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
Training & Competencies
- EPIC training required:
- CLIN DOC ACCELERATED class for RNs with 6+ months EPIC experience in the past 12 months (approx. 4 hours of modules).
- CLIN DOC 2 DAY class for RNs with less than 6 months EPIC experience (no modules).
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required.
- Medication/pharmacology competency exam as applicable.
- Core competency training (Parts I, II, III) required annually.
- Color blind testing required prior to start.
- HIPAA and safety manual acknowledgement required.
Health & Safety Requirements
- Flu vaccine required during flu season (Oct 1 – Mar 31). Medical or religious exemptions allowed with proper documentation and approval.
- Negative TB test (PPD, Tspot, or QGold) within 1 year of start; annual TB questionnaire required.
- Adult TDAP vaccine required if working in certain units (not specifically required here but may be relevant).
- Fit mask test within last 12 months required.
- Negative 11-panel drug screen within 30 days of start.
- Physical exam within 1 year of start, attesting ability to meet physical demands.
- Required immunizations or proof of immunity for Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella.
- COVID-19 precautions may apply.
Background & Documentation
- 7-year criminal background check within 1 year of start, updated annually.
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and for contract renewals.
- Education verification required.
- Proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations.
- Employment application and skills checklist as applicable.
- Vendor Access Request (VAR) form completion and facility background check through HireRight.
- Government-issued photo ID required and must be carried during work hours.
- Passport-style photo for facility badge required.
- Completion and signing of facility-specific policies and acknowledgements prior to start (e.g., confidentiality, code of ethics, dress code, infection control, parking, information security).

- Candidates must wear both agency and facility badges at all times.
- EPIC training modules may take 5-8 hours; timely completion is critical.
