Unit Details

• Med/Surg unit
• 5th floor
• 22 beds
• Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:4
• No tele/monitor techs on the unit; RNs are not required to read their own strips
• Charge nurse takes an assignment
• Nurse aide ratio: 1:50

Clinical Experience / Patient Population

• Common patient types include CHF, hypertension, chest pain work-ups, COPD exacerbations, asthma, pneumonia, pancreatitis, bowel obstructions, gastrointestinal bleeding, and acute renal failure
• RNs are required to titrate drips
• Common titratable drips include analgesics for pain, anticoagulants for blood clots, and antihypertensives for blood pressure control
• Respiratory equipment on the unit includes Cpap, BiPap, High Flow, and vents

Scheduling and Work Expectations

• Self-scheduling and block scheduling are available
• Full-time and part-time staff are expected to self-schedule a minimum of six weekend shifts per six-week schedule
• Holiday coverage is required
• Call or standby is determined by the nurse manager
• Floating is determined by the nurse manager and department needs; in an extreme need, float within Zone 1
• May be asked to float into ICU, PCU/Stepdown, and MS-Tele
• Must be in state for the week of orientation, even if first-day modules are remote

• No unit manager involvement in the interview process
• Driver’s license must be submitted
