Registered Nurse - Medical Surgical (Travel/Contract)

Location: Utica, New York
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Specialty: Medical Surgical Nursing
  • Shift: Day shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (6:30 AM - 7:00 PM)
  • Patient Ratio:
    • Days: 1 nurse to 5-6 patients
    • Nights: 1 nurse to 6-7 patients
  • Local radius for commute: 75 miles
  • Time off: Only one holiday allowed; total time off 7 days or less

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in New York
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Minimum 2 years of Medical Surgical nursing experience, with experience within the last year
  • BLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system

Certifications & Training

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) strongly preferred (AHA certification required for renewals)
  • BLS certification through AHA preferred
  • Harassment Prevention Training Certificate (New York state requirement)
  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam (minimum 80% passing score)
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam (required for ICU, PCU, ER, CT ICU, and 7th Floor Med/Surg Unit; expires every 3 years)
  • Color Blind Testing (required prior to start)
  • Competency exams as applicable to profession

Health & Compliance Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start date
  • Fit mask test within 1 year of start and updated annually (specific approved mask types required)
  • Negative TB test (PPD, Quantiferon Gold) or chest X-ray within 1 year of start
  • Immunizations or positive titers required for:
    • Rubeola (Measles)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Hepatitis B (titer, declination, or vaccine series)
    • Varicella (positive titer, vaccine proof, or documented history)
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or declination required during flu season (September 1 - March 31)
  • Pneumonia vaccination or declination required
  • 9 Panel Drug Screen within 1 year of start (instant drug screen acceptable)

Documentation & Onboarding

  • Government-issued photo ID (driver’s license or state ID)
  • Emergency contact form required prior to start
  • Background checks including 7-year search, SS trace, county searches, sex offender registry, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG (updated annually)
  • Education verification and Florida Education Audit Confirmation (for RN staff)
  • Facility-specific documents including:
    • Photo for badge (headshot, plain background, no head coverings)
    • Online learning modules to be completed before first shift
    • Signed job description and welcome packet acknowledgment
    • Omnicell form for nursing staff
    • Pneumococcal declination form if applicable
  • References:
    • 2 professional references for travel, allied, or per diem acute care roles (within 3 years)
    • 1 professional reference for per diem non-acute care roles

Additional Notes

  • Locals accepted at a local bill rate reduced by $10 (pay details excluded)
  • No prior travel experience explicitly required for this position
