Respiratory Therapist (RRT) – Adults (Travel/Contract)
Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Day shift, 3x12 hour shifts (7:00 AM – 7:00 PM)
Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts in a 6-week block
Holiday Requirement: Must work one holiday per 13-week contract
Job Summary
- Provide respiratory care in a high-volume Emergency Room at a Level 1 Trauma Center.
- Must have critical care experience including Neurotrauma, cardiovascular services, and medical/surgical ICU patients.
- Float within skillset as needed.
- Patient population includes adolescents, adults, and geriatrics.
- Follow robust Assess and Treat protocols, including ventilator management and liberation policies.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Respiratory Therapist license in Virginia
- Registered Respiratory Therapist with a minimum of 1 year of experience, including experience within the last year
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Experience working with Level 1 Trauma patients
- Proficient in arterial blood gas (ABG) interpretation and ventilator management including BiPAP, CPAP, HFNC, flow-by, troubleshooting high-pressure alarms, and weaning from mechanical ventilation
- Skilled in airway management including extubation, oral/nasal airway placement, suctioning, sputum collection, and tracheostomy care
- Proficient in aerosol and medication delivery systems (mask, trach, MDI, Medihaler) and administration of respiratory medications including Albuterol, Atrovent, Combivent, Flovent, Pulmicort, Mucomyst, racemic epinephrine, inhaled Flolan, inhaled steroids, bicarbonate, and lidocaine
- Experience with Epic electronic medical record system
Clinical Skills
- Proficient in aerosol and medication delivery systems (mask, trach, MDI, Medihaler).
- Skilled in administering respiratory medications including Albuterol, Atrovent, Combivent, Flovent, Pulmicort, Mucomyst, racemic epinephrine, inhaled Flolan, inhaled steroids, bicarbonate, and lidocaine.
- Competent in arterial blood gas (ABG) interpretation and ventilator management (BiPAP, CPAP, HFNC, flow-by, troubleshooting high-pressure alarms, weaning from mechanical ventilation).
- Airway management skills including extubation, oral/nasal airway placement, suctioning, sputum collection, and tracheostomy care.
- Proficient in oxygen therapy and nebulizer setups (handheld, T-piece, trach collar, ultrasonic).
Scheduling & Work Conditions
- Shift pattern: 3 twelve-hour day shifts per week; 4x12 shifts available upon request.
- Facility allows calling off 1 shift per 2 weeks.
- Charting experience with EPIC required.
- Locals are not accepted due to radius restrictions.
- All scheduling requests must be submitted with application.
Facility & Equipment
- Level 1 Trauma Center with a high volume ER.
- Equipment includes Servo I, Servo U, V-60 BiPAP, Optiflow heated high flow, iNO with iNOvent, and LTV1200 ventilators.
- Patient ratio approximately 1:25.
Required Documentation & Compliance
- Valid Driver’s License/State ID with an address more than 100 miles from the facility required within 48 hours of signing.
- Background check covering 7 years of history required within 1 year of start date.
- E-Verify or attestation required.
- Primary source verification of state license within 30 days of start.
- Physical exam within 1 year confirming freedom from communicable diseases.
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start.
- Fit test within 1 year of start, updated annually.
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year, updated annually.
- Required immunizations or positive titers for Rubeola, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella.
- Two clinical references required.
- Completed employment application/resume.
- Annual skills checklist update required.
- Completion of facility-specific compliance and orientation paperwork prior to start.
Additional Notes
- Must work one holiday during the contract.
- Floating within the respiratory therapy skillset is expected.
- EPIC charting experience is mandatory.
- First-time travelers accepted; 1 year travel experience preferred but not required.
