Registered Nurse – ER Float Pool

Location: Garden City, Kansas (Zone 4)
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Job Overview

• Float within a 60-mile radius covering multiple ER locations in Zone 4 (including Garden City, Ulysses, and Dodge City).
• No home base facility; assignments vary by schedule and location within the zone.
• Night shifts, 12 hours per shift, approximately 36 hours per week.
• Weekend and holiday work every other week.
• Floating is mandatory across all ERs in the zone.

Unit & Patient Care

• ER/ED Float Pool with variable bed and trauma bay availability.
• Non-trauma designated facilities; STEMI receiving and stroke center capabilities with send-outs.
• Patient volume ranges from 6 to 49 patients per day depending on location.
• Nurse-to-patient ratio typically 1:4-5 based on acuity.
• Common patient diagnoses: abdominal pain, diabetes mellitus, NSTEMI, pneumonia, trauma, stroke, hypertension.
• Standard ER medications and drips used.
• No separate psych/seclusion rooms; ER holds are intermixed.
• Charge nurse takes an assignment.
• Tech support available for unit secretary duties, nursing assistance, and triage support.
• Respiratory therapy available 24/7; RNs must be able to troubleshoot respiratory equipment and interpret telemetry strips (no monitor tech support).
• Point of Care lab testing performed by RNs after training.

Orientation & Scheduling

• Unit-specific orientation lasts 2-3 days.
• Leadership sets schedules based on unit needs; no self-scheduling.

Required Certifications

• ACLS (AHA)
• BLS (AHA)
• PALS or ENPC
• TNCC
• NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)

Required Qualifications

• Valid RN license for Kansas.
• Experience in Emergency Nursing Float Pool or ER setting preferred (years of experience not explicitly stated).
• Ability and willingness to float across multiple ER locations within the zone.
• Must be physically and logistically prepared to travel and obtain housing within the 60-mile radius to accommodate floating requirements.
• Ability to read and interpret telemetry strips independently.

Additional Notes

• Week of orientation requires clinicians to be physically present in-state, even if some modules are completed remotely.
• Scrub color/dress code: Navy Blue.
• No call or standby requirements.
