Sterile Processing Tech (SPT) - Travel/Contract

Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

  • Supervisor role in Sterile Processing Department (SPD) with leadership responsibilities.
  • Shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 AM – 7:30 PM), Friday through Sunday, including holiday rotation.
  • No weekend requirement beyond scheduled shifts.
  • Floating within scope to meet facility needs, including sister facilities and possible permanent reassignment.
  • Level 1 Trauma Center experience required.

Responsibilities

  • Supervision & Leadership (30%)

    • Direct supervision of Lead Technician, Tech I, II, III, and Non-Certified Technicians across all SPD areas (decontamination, prep/pack, sterilization, case carts, sterile storage).
    • Assign daily staff tasks based on workload and priorities.
    • Oversee instrument tracking systems, documentation, and inventory control.
    • Collaborate on orientation and training plans.
  • Department Advancement & Expectations (30%)

    • Coordinate daily SPD operations to meet surgical/procedural demands.
    • Monitor tray turnaround times, instrument availability, and case cart readiness.
    • Troubleshoot equipment, instrument, and workflow issues in real time.
    • Ensure clean/dirty workflow segregation and infection prevention compliance.
    • Maintain compliance with AAMI ST79, AORN guidelines, CDC recommendations, and regulatory standards.
  • Coordination & Management of Specialty Services (30%)

    • Audit tray assembly accuracy, count sheets, peel packs, and labeling.
    • Address service concerns and implement service recovery.
    • Participate in interdisciplinary meetings on instrumentation, workflow, and quality initiatives.
  • Sterile Processing Duties (10%)

    • Monitor infection control, safety, and universal precautions.
    • Organize, store, and distribute instruments and equipment.
    • Prepare instrument trays and equipment for sterilization.
    • Perform decontamination and sterilization of instruments, medical supplies, and equipment.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of Sterile Processing Technician experience, including experience within the last year.
  • Completion of at least one travel assignment as a Sterile Processing Technician.
  • Prior experience in Supervisor roles within sterile processing.
  • National certification required: CBSPD or CRCST.
  • Level 1 Trauma Center experience required.

Licensure & Certifications

  • National certification in sterile processing (CBSPD and/or CRCST) required.
  • BLS not required for this role.

Health & Safety Requirements

  • Physical assessment for sterile processors completed and signed by a licensed provider within one year of start; must be updated annually.
  • Fit test for N95 mask (O&M Halyard FLUIDSHIELD or 3M Aura 1870+) within 90 days prior to start and annually thereafter.
  • Required immunizations or proof of immunity:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years or declination form).
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella: positive titer or vaccination series with boosters if needed.
    • Varicella: positive titer or vaccination series with boosters if needed.
    • Hepatitis B: titer, vaccine series, or declination.
  • Negative TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold) within 90 days of start or chest X-ray if prior positive. Annual TB questionnaire required.
  • 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start; no instant tests accepted.
  • COVID-19 vaccination highly preferred; if declined, must complete vaccination declination form.
  • Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP) and Complete Blood Count (CBC) with differential required due to chemical exposure risk.

Background & Documentation Requirements

  • Annual background check covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years, including SSN trace, statewide, national criminal, sex offender registry, and FACIS 3.
  • Employment verification of last 3 clinical employers.
  • Education verification required; diploma or transcripts accepted as placeholder if needed.
  • Copy of Driver’s License/State ID and Social Security Card required.
  • E-Verify attestation confirming work eligibility in the US.
  • Color blindness testing required prior to start.
  • Competency exams required as applicable.
  • Proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations.
  • Complete employment application/resume including all PTO, contract assignments, agency names, and no unaccounted gaps.
  • Radiation badge may be required depending on assignment; process and timing must be followed if applicable.

Additional Information

  • Local radius: 60 miles; local candidates accepted case-by-case.
  • Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks.
  • Employees and contractors are assigned to emergency response teams; hurricane season runs June through November with peak in August and September.
  • Orientation includes mandatory completion of online modules prior to start; failure to complete results in being sent home.
  • Passport-style badge photo required before start.
  • Parking fee applies only nights and weekends.
