Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical

Location: Kalamazoo, Michigan
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each; 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Hours per Week: 36 hours (option for 48 hours available)

Unit and Patient Population

• 18-bed Admission Unit (AU), fast-paced environment
• Patient population: stable adult medical/surgical, cardiac patients on antiarrhythmic drips, neuro patients post-TIA/CVA
• Hybrid patient population includes Inpatient, Observation, and Clinical Decision Unit (CDU) patients
• Care involves managing antiarrhythmic medication drips, insulin drips for DKA, and performing NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) assessments
• Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:4-6
• May float to other med/surg departments and ED waiting room as needed
• Focus on episodic patient-family centered care, facilitating discharges, and throughput to decompress the ED

Required Qualifications

• Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Michigan
• Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
• Minimum 2 years of experience as a Registered Nurse
• Minimum 2 years of Medical-Surgical and Telemetry nursing experience, with at least some experience within the last year
• BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
• NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification

Scheduling and Work Conditions

• Weekend: work every other weekend
• No call required
• Block scheduling cannot be guaranteed
• Dress code: hunter green scrubs

Equipment and Software

• Remote and wall mount telemetry monitors
• Bladder scanner
• Vein light
• iPop
• Epic electronic charting system

Required Certifications and Competencies

• BLS (AHA)
• NIH Stroke Scale certification (AHA, APEX, Bluecloud; annual update required)
• ACLS (AHA) preferred
• Medication/Pharmacology competency exam within 1 year prior to assignment start (minimum 80% passing score)
• Competency exam in specialty within 1 year prior to start (minimum 80% passing score)
• Orientation Safety Manual acknowledgment required

Background and Compliance Requirements

• Criminal background check within 45 days of start, including lifetime search from age 18
• Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required
• Michigan LARA fingerprinting required within 45 days of start (process coordinated via DocuSign and appointment scheduling)
• Education verification required (copy of highest degree or diploma)
• Michigan Central Registry Clearance required for certain specialties (not applicable here)
• Complete employment application/resume with full 7 years work history, no gaps
• One professional reference from a supervisor or manager required

Health and Immunization Requirements

• Physical exam within 1 year of start
• Negative TB test (PPD or Q Gold/Tspot) within 30 days of start; if positive, chest x-ray and TB questionnaire required
• Annual TB questionnaire update required
• Proof of 1 prior Tdap vaccine required
• Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: 2 vaccines or positive titer required (no exemptions accepted)
• Hepatitis B: titer, series, or facility declination required
• Seasonal flu vaccination required for candidates starting after November 1, or approved medical/spiritual exemption submitted within 48 hours of contract signing
• 10-panel drug test including Marijuana/THC within 30 days of start (instant/rapid acceptable if full panel)

Additional Facility Requirements

• Review and sign Code of Conduct and Appearance Standards Policy prior to start
• Fit test appointment required for certain clinical roles (not specified for this RN role)
• Vaccine exemption forms must be submitted and approved in advance if applicable
