Job Details

  • Unit: Neuro ICU
  • Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each; 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM)
  • Patient Ratio: Average 1:2 (days and nights)
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • Floating: May float within scope to meet facility needs
  • Block Schedule: Not accommodated
  • On-call: Not required
  • Pending License: Accepted
  • Guaranteed Hours: Yes
  • Required Experience: Minimum 2 years Neuro ICU experience
  • First-time travelers: Accepted

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Connecticut
  • Minimum 2 years of Neuro ICU nursing experience, with Neuro ICU experience within the last year
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

Compliance and Background Checks

  • 7-year criminal background check (including SSN trace, counties lived/worked, statewide, national sex offender, federal, and extended checks) within 12 months of start
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start
  • Education verification including foreign equivalency evaluation if applicable
  • Verification of highest level of education required
  • Sex offender search required

Competency and Testing Requirements

  • Medication/Pharmacology Competency Exam (minimum 85% passing score) within 12 months of start
  • Color Blind Testing (minimum 80% passing score) required for all candidates starting on or after 8/2/2024
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam required for ICU nurses (not required for NICU or Behavioral Health)

Health and Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 12 months of start
  • Fit mask test within 12 months of start; must be updated annually (clean shaven required for fit testing)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray documentation (various acceptable test types)
  • Annual TB questionnaire
  • Immunizations or positive titers required for:
    • Rubeola (Measles)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Hepatitis B (or declination within 1 year)
    • Varicella (or documented history/vaccines)
  • Tdap vaccination highly preferred for Pediatric specialties, Labor and Delivery, and Postpartum (declination accepted)
  • 10-panel drug screen within 12 months of start
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/1 – 3/31)
  • COVID vaccination series preferred but not required

  • CAUTI Education Training (except PICU, NICU, Psychiatry/Behavioral Health)
  • Suicide Risk and Environmental Assessment Training
  • Mobile Heartbeat Alarm Module (except ER/ED, Pediatrics, ICU, NICU)
  • Stroke Education Module (except Pediatric specialties and NICU)
  • CLABSI Prevention for Adult and Pediatric Training
  • Preventing Pressure Injury Training
  • Patient Transportation with Oxygen Education
  • Pyxis ES MedStation Training
  • Baxter Pump Interoperability Training
  • Patient Bedside Rounding (except OR, Behavioral Health, Ambulatory, ER/ED)
  • Ventricular Assist Device Awareness (except certain hospitals)
  • AME Blood Administration Module (except Case Managers, Behavioral Health/Psych, Home Health) – annual update required
  • New Employee Orientation Module (copy required by end of first day)
  • 21st Century Cures Act Module (required for RNs except Home Health)
  • ED Handbook (for ED/ER RNs only)
  • eCart Training Module (not required for Pediatric, Periop/OR, Outpatient, Case Managers, Home Health)
  • Chaperone Policy Training (required if gap of 6+ months between assignments or module updated)
  • Fire Safety Module (effective 5/4/2026 and forward)

Employment History and References

  • Must provide 7 years of work history with no gaps greater than 90 days
  • Verification of last 7 years of employment required (attestations not accepted)
  • One supervisor reference within the past year required for Cardio Thoracic ICU (CTICU) assignments (charge nurse references not accepted)
  • Skills checklist required within 12 months of start

Additional Notes

  • Candidates must complete all required attestations and training modules, often via electronic signature
  • Pending licenses accepted with conditions
  • Return-to-Orientation (RTO) restrictions: RTO greater than 7 days requires approval
