Registered Nurse – Behavioral Health

Location: Kealakekua, Hawaii
Employment Type: Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Night shift only

Job Description

Provide nursing care on an 11-bed adult behavioral health unit.
Perform patient admissions, daily assessments, and discharges.
Care for dual diagnosis patients, including those who are chemically dependent.
Comfortable working with forensic patients.

Required Qualifications

Valid RN license in Hawaii
Associate of Science in Nursing or Associate Degree in Nursing
Minimum 2 years of nursing experience with at least 2 years in psychology, including experience within the last year
Current certification in the management of assaultive patients (e.g., CPI or equivalent) must be obtained before start date
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification required

Pros

The staff are very friendly. Very much a cooperative spirit throughout the hospital. Lots of travelers here.There is a dedicated Facebook page, KCH Travelers, to help you find transportation and lodging nearby.

Cons

Minimal public transport--not really feasible for hospital shift hours. KCH is somewhat remote...At least a 10 mile drive from the main part of Kona to the hospital. Ten miles might not sound like a lot, but the road is mostly one lane in either direction and can get very congested in points. I'm staying in a 2-room efficiency apartment which is, in my view, sadly lacking amenities that I have had to purchase and I will leave behind for the next person.
