Registered Nurse - Emergency Department
Location: Asheville, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Overview
- Emergency Department with 101 beds
- Patient Ratios: Typically 4:1 for medical patients, up to 7:1 for behavioral holds
- Staffing includes techs, unit clerks, and cardiac monitoring support
- Equipment used: Baxter pumps, GE monitors
- Documentation system: Cerner
- Scheduling: Every other weekend required; no block scheduling; must meet department needs
- Floating: No floating outside the ED; must float within all ED sections
- Patient Experience: Emphasis on AIDET communication, respectful behavior, and keeping patients informed throughout their visit
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Minimum 2 years of nursing experience, including at least 2 years in a high-volume Emergency Department (>100,000 visits annually)
- At least 1 year of experience in an Emergency Room setting within the last year
- Minimum 2 years of experience in a Level 2 trauma center
- Minimum 2 years of experience in a comprehensive stroke center
- Experience in an Acute Care setting
- Current certifications required before start:
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
- Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC)
- Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI)
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
- Flexibility to work in all areas of the Emergency Department
Orientation & Scheduling
- Orientation: 4-hour hospital orientation plus an 8-hour floor shift
- Dress Code: Navy scrubs for RNs (white or combination of navy and white also acceptable)
- Attendance and scheduling policies provided on day one
Work Environment & Culture
- Known for strong teamwork and welcoming staff
- Serves a diverse, multicultural community with over 120 languages spoken locally
- High-volume Emergency Department (>100,000 visits annually)
- Level 2 trauma center and comprehensive stroke center experience preferred
Additional Notes
- Tobacco use is prohibited on all campus properties, including personal vehicles in designated parking areas
- Must be open to floating within the Emergency Department but not outside it
