Registered Nurse (MedSurg Level 8 - 23)

Location: Weirton, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Unit Details

• Unit Type: Medical-Surgical
• Number of Beds: 48
• Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:

  • Day shift: 1:5-7
  • Night shift: 1:6-8
• Common Patient Diagnoses: Pneumonia, UTI, AMS, GI bleed, Alcohol withdrawal, falls/weakness

Shift & Scheduling

• Shift Hours: 7 AM - 7 PM for RNs; 6 AM - 6 PM for CNAs
• Scheduling: No self-scheduling or block scheduling; schedule created by manager with consideration for requested time off
• Shift Rotation: Typically 2 weeks of days followed by 2 weeks of nights (rotating shifts)
• Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
• Holiday Requirement: May be asked to participate in holiday rotation (RNs rotate holidays; PCTs work scheduled days)
• Call/Standby: None
• Floating: May float to other Medical-Surgical, Medical-Surgical Telemetry, or Intermediate Care units for lower acuity patients

Required Qualifications

• Valid RN license in West Virginia
• Minimum 1 year of Medical-Surgical nursing experience within the last year
• BLS certification
• Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

Job Duties & Skills

• Patient Care: Vital signs, blood glucose monitoring, EKGs, applying heart monitors, bathing, feeding, toileting, turning, and positioning
• IV Drip Titration: RNs titrate drips with exceptions; no cardiac drip titration
• Common Drips: Heparin, Bumex, Lasix
• Respiratory Equipment: Respiratory Therapists manage breathing treatments, inhalers, ABGs, and respiratory equipment (BiPAP, CPAP, high flow O2); RNs monitor but do not perform treatments
• Telemetry Monitoring: Telemetry techs monitor cardiac telemetry; RNs are not required to interpret telemetry strips

Support Staff & Ratios

• Patient Care Techs (PCTs)/Nurse Aides: Ratio approximately 1:10-12; duties include vitals, basic care, and assistance with activities of daily living
• Charge Nurse: Two charge nurses on day shift who take patient assignments; at night, if only one charge nurse is scheduled, they do not take assignments

Orientation & Training

• Unit Orientation: 1 day educator/computer system training, plus 1 day preceptor shadowing
• Orientation Shift Length: 12-hour days, including weekends as scheduled

Additional Notes

• Must comply with a 50-mile radius rule for candidate submissions
• Unexpired driver’s license required for submission
• Dress Code: Navy blue scrubs for RNs
• PCT class available for those interested in becoming Patient Care Technicians; CNA certification also accepted
