Registered Nurse - Medical-Surgical (Contract)

Location: New York, NY
Employment Type: Staffing - Supplier Sourced
Shift: 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM (12-hour shifts, 3 shifts per week)
Contract Length: Approximately 13 weeks


Job Summary

Provide safe, competent, quality nursing care to a designated group of patients in surgical and medical specialties. Deliver care based on nursing theory, research, evidence-based practice, and organizational standards.


Key Responsibilities

Patient Care

  • Deliver patient care using Relationship Centered Care principles and the nursing process.
  • Assess and evaluate patient needs, applying critical thinking in care management.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop, implement, and evaluate care plans.
  • Prioritize patient care activities including teaching, rounding, coaching, discharge planning, and delegation.
  • Educate patients and caregivers on care plans, health promotion, and disease prevention.
  • Communicate professionally with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
  • Manage assignments within a Modified Primary Nursing care delivery model.

Patient Experience

  • Facilitate patient-centered actions such as Admission Welcome, Bedside Shift Report, Purposeful Hourly Rounding, Medication Review, and Discharge Wrap Up.
  • Respect patient values, preferences, cultural diversity, and expressed needs.
  • Establish therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
  • Use evidence-based practices to understand and improve patient perceptions of care.
  • Initiate service recovery and escalate patient/family concerns appropriately.
  • Demonstrate caring, respect, compassion, empathy, and active listening.

Quality and Safety

  • Practice safe, efficient, patient-centered care and identify barriers to quality.
  • Demonstrate clinical skills essential to patient safety.
  • Participate in quality improvement projects, evidence-based practice activities, and nursing research.
  • Escalate safety hazards or gaps following institutional protocols.
  • Document nursing practice accurately to support quality and performance improvement.

Operations

  • Perform charge nurse duties as assigned.
  • Coordinate supply and inventory management with nursing leadership.
  • Escalate material or staffing shortages appropriately.
  • Promote cost-effective patient care resource utilization.
  • Facilitate patient throughput during shifts.
  • Maintain thorough and compliant documentation.

Professional Development

  • Support clinical colleagues, patients, families, and healthcare team members.
  • Advance clinical competence from novice to expert.
  • Project a professional image demonstrating caring, respect, compassion, and empathy.
  • Apply ethical principles in decision-making.
  • Encourage lifelong learning, inquiry, and innovation.
  • Participate in specialty practice councils, nursing committees, and unit initiatives.

Required Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse (RN) license in New York State.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required.
  • Minimum 2 years of medical-surgical nursing experience in a hospital setting.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Prior travel nursing experience required for travel positions (minimum 1 year); not required for per diem.
  • Experience with EPIC electronic health record system highly preferred.

Unit Information

  • Average unit census: 33.4 patients
  • Unit size: 35 beds

Note: This position requires a minimum of 2 years of medical-surgical experience and a BSN degree.
