Registered Nurse – MS/Telemetry Unit

Location: Kalamazoo, Michigan
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Day shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 AM – 7:30 PM)
Hours per Week: 36 hours
Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
Holiday Requirement: Every other holiday
Call Requirement: None


Unit and Patient Population

  • 46-bed surgical unit
  • Patient types include trauma surgery, post-bariatric surgery, post-abdominal surgery, post-amputation surgery, urological issues
  • Also accepts medically and cardiac overflow patients
  • Nurse-to-patient ratios typically 1:5-6; may increase to 1:7 during call-ins
  • New travelers onboarded regularly to help manage workload
  • Patient charting done in Cerner

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Michigan
  • Minimum 1 year of Med Surg / Telemetry nursing experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • ACLS certification
  • BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification

Background and Compliance Requirements

  • Background check covering last 7 years and all states lived/worked in, required within 90 days of start and annually thereafter
  • Education verification or copy of diploma/transcripts required
  • Physical exam required prior to start
  • Negative 12-panel drug screen within 30 days of start (includes amphetamines, cannabinoids, MDMA, methamphetamines, buprenorphine, oxycodone, fentanyl, cocaine, methadone, tramadol, benzodiazepines, morphine/opiate)
  • TB screening: Negative 2-step PPD or Q-gold within 1 year; T-Spots not accepted; if positive PPD, chest x-ray within past 12 months required
  • Immunizations or titers required for:
    • Measles (Rubeola)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Varicella
    • Hepatitis B (titer, series, or declination)
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required prior to start and documentation on file by December 15
  • Fit mask testing required within 1 year of assignment start and must not expire during assignment (specific mask types accepted); PAPR training available if unable to pass fit test

Additional Requirements

  • Clear, passport-style photo for badge
  • Completion of facility-specific confidentiality and non-disclosure agreement prior to start
  • Completion of mandatory online modules (approximately 8-10 hours) before start date; modules vary by unit and must be completed by Friday before start
  • No call responsibilities

Notes

  • The unit is actively hiring Patient Care Technician (PCT) support to assist nursing staff
  • Candidates with prior experience working at the facility within the past year may be exempt from completing new modules
  • Candidates must be comfortable with the patient ratios and workload described
