Job Opportunity: Pediatric Critical Care Float Pool Registered Nurse

Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Shift: Night shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
  • Hours per Week: 36 hours
  • Weekend Requirement: Minimum 3-4 weekend shifts per schedule, including holiday rotation
  • Patient Ratios: 1:2 or 1:3
  • Float Pool: RN will float to all pediatric units including CVPICU, NICU, and PICU within the hospital
  • Local Radius: 60 miles
  • Locals Accepted: Yes, on a case-by-case basis

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in South Carolina
  • Minimum 2 years of Critical Care Float experience, with at least 1 year within the last year
  • Experience in Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), Cardiovascular Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (CVPICU), and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
  • BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • PALS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

Schedule & Work Conditions

  • Block scheduling may be accommodated with manager approval and based on unit needs
  • Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks
  • During hurricane season (June–November, peak in August and September), all staff may be assigned to emergency response teams

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • Background Checks:
    • Annual background check covering all locations lived/worked in the past 7 years
    • Includes SSN trace, state and national criminal checks, sex offender registry, FACIS 3, and international searches if applicable
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
  • Education Verification: Required; diploma or transcripts accepted as placeholder if verification is pending
  • References: Proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations
  • Employment History: Complete application/resume including all PTO, contract assignments, agency names, and no unaccounted gaps; last 3 clinical employers verified
  • Competency Exams: Medication/pharmacology and competency exams required; pediatric OR candidates may use regular exams if no pediatric experience
  • Color Blind Testing: Required prior to start
  • Photo for Badge: Clear, passport-style photo with solid light background, frontal view, business casual attire, no posing or other people/objects

Health & Safety Requirements

  • Physical Exam: Initial and annual physical exam attesting ability to meet job demands
  • Fit Mask Test: N95 fit test within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually; specific mask models required
  • Immunizations & Titers:
    • Tdap within 10 years or declination form
    • Negative TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold) within 90 days or chest X-ray if prior positive
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: positive titer or vaccination series with boosters as needed
    • Hepatitis B: titer, vaccine series, or declination required
    • Seasonal Flu Vaccine: required during flu season (Aug 1 – Mar 31); medical/religious exemptions accepted but no declinations
  • Drug Testing: 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start; no instant tests accepted
  • COVID-19 Vaccination: Not required but highly preferred; vaccination records must be uploaded or declination form completed

Additional Notes

  • Radiation Badge: Not required for this position
  • Orientation: Completion of facility-specific orientation modules and first day instructions required before starting; modules take approximately 2 hours and must be completed on a computer (not mobile)
  • Emergency Response: Staff may be assigned to emergency teams during hurricane season
  • Return to Office (RTO) Requests: Must be submitted at time of application; approval based on unit needs
