Registered Nurse – MedSurg/Telemetry

Location: Rochester, New York
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks (with possible extension)
Shift: Day shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 AM – 7:00 PM)
Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
Floating: Required
Local Candidates: Not accepted; must live more than 75 miles away
Patient Ratio Experience: Must have experience managing a 1:6 patient ratio (able to handle 1:5 to 1:7 on this high-volume MedSurg/Telemetry unit)
Charge Nurse Experience: Required
Charting System: EPIC experience required


Unit & Patient Population

  • Complex care unit for Medicine, orthopedic overflow, and complex long-term patients
  • High volume MedSurg/Telemetry unit

Required Skills & Clinical Competencies

  • MedSurg and Telemetry nursing, including telemetry monitoring on the unit
  • Use of Rapid Response and Code teams
  • Pacemaker management (temporary and permanent)
  • Feeding tube care and management
  • Blood product administration
  • Central line, peripheral line, and PICC line care/management
  • Phlebotomy and IV starts
  • Heparin protocols
  • Orthopedic trauma and total joint replacements
  • Surgical drains management
  • High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC), nasal cannula, oxygen face masks, and portable oxygen tank use
  • Tracheostomy management
  • Isolation precautions
  • Wound care and wound vac management

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in New York
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Minimum 1 year of MedSurg/Telemetry nursing experience within the last year
  • Experience managing a 1:6 patient ratio
  • Experience in charge nurse roles
  • BLS - Basic Life Support issued by American Heart Association
  • NIH Stroke Certification
  • Pacemaker care and management (temporary and permanent)
  • Feeding tube care and management
  • Blood product administration
  • Central line care and management
  • PICC line management
  • Heparin protocol management
  • Tracheostomy management
  • High flow nasal cannula (HFNC) administration
  • Surgical drain management
  • Experience with Epic

Health & Compliance Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start, updated annually
  • Fit mask test within 1 year, updated annually (specific acceptable mask types)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year (or TB questionnaire as applicable)
  • Immunizations or positive titers for:
    • Rubeola (Measles)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Hepatitis B (surface antibody positive titer, completed series, or declination)
    • Varicella
  • Drug screening within 30 days of start
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or signed declination during flu season
  • Snellen eye exam within 1 year of start
  • COVID vaccination copy preferred but not required

Background & Verification

  • Government-issued photo ID required
  • 7-year criminal background check within 3 months of start (including felony, SSN trace, national criminal, sex offender, education verification)
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 3 months and updated monthly
  • Education verification from primary source required (no hard copy degrees accepted)
  • Employment verification of at least 2 past employments required
  • References: 2 references within 3 years (required for direct hire candidates)

Additional Notes

  • Scrub color: navy bottoms, navy or white tops
  • Facility uses Epic for charting
  • Candidates must be prepared for floating to other units as needed

This position is ideal for experienced MedSurg/Telemetry RNs comfortable with complex patient care, telemetry monitoring, and high patient volumes in a tertiary care hospital setting.
