Registered Nurse – MS/Telemetry

Location: Rochester, New York
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM)
Hours per Week: 36


Job Description

  • Provide nursing care on Medical-Surgical and Telemetry units.
  • Mandatory competency in phlebotomy and IV placement.
  • Patient ratios:
    • Day/Evening: 5:1 (stretch 6-7)
    • Night: 6-7:1 (stretch 8-10 if staff calls in)
  • Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) assist with vital signs, blood glucose checks, EKGs, and activities of daily living.
  • Must float within scope to similar units as needed.
  • Weekend requirement: Every other weekend (EOW).
  • Block scheduling may be accommodated but is not guaranteed.
  • No local candidates accepted within 75 miles radius.

Patient Population & Care Requirements

  • Common diagnoses: osteoarthritis, fractures.
  • Special skills required:
    • Interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
    • IV insulin protocols
    • Feeding tube care and management
    • Blood product administration
    • Peripheral line care/management
    • Heparin protocols
    • Management of cardiac drips (no titration)
    • PCA management
    • Ortho trauma and total joint replacements
    • Chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac)
    • External CPAP/BIPAP
    • High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC)
    • Tracheostomy management
    • Wound care and wound vac management

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in New York.
  • Minimum 1 year of Med Surg / Telemetry nursing experience within the last year.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.
  • Proficient in interpretation and management of dysrhythmias.
  • Experience with IV insulin protocols.
  • Skilled in feeding tube care and management.
  • Knowledge of heparin protocols.
  • Ability to manage cardiac drips (no titration).
  • Experience with ortho trauma care.
  • Competent in chest tube management (Emerson/Pleur-evac).
  • Experience with external CPAP/BIPAP.
  • Skilled in High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC) management.
  • Proficient in tracheostomy management.

Health and Compliance Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year, updated annually.
  • Fit mask test (N95 or equivalent) within 1 year, updated annually.
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year.
  • Immunizations or proof of immunity required for:
    • Rubeola (Measles)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Hepatitis B
    • Varicella
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or signed declination required during flu season.
  • Drug screening within 30 days of start.
  • Snellen eye exam within 1 year.
  • COVID vaccination copy preferred but not required.

Background and Verification

  • Government-issued photo ID required.
  • 7-year criminal background check required within 3 months of start.
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 3 months and updated monthly.
  • Education verification from primary source required.
  • Foreign equivalency evaluation required if education obtained internationally.
  • Transcript/diploma required if education verification is not on file.
  • Employment application and work history verification required.
  • References required for direct hire candidates (2 references within 3 years).
  • Facility-specific documents and attestations must be completed prior to start.
  • Fingerprinting and additional background checks may be required for certain units.

Additional Information

  • Scrub color: Any combination of navy and white.
  • Charting system: Epic.
  • Return to office (RTO) restrictions: No more than 1 week allowed during contract.
  • Locals within 75 miles are not accepted for this assignment.

This position offers an opportunity to work in a specialized MS/Telemetry environment with a focus on cardiac and orthopedic patient care, requiring strong clinical skills and flexibility to float between units.
