Job Opportunity: Sterile Processing Tech

Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Details

  • Shift: Evening, 5 days a week, 8-hour shifts (3:00 PM – 11:30 PM)
  • Weekend Requirement: Rotating weekends
  • Floating: May be required to float within scope to other facilities or permanently switch to other campuses
  • Guaranteed Hours: Facility may call off 1 shift every 2 weeks
  • Callout Policy: Maximum 2 callouts allowed without a doctor’s note; 3rd callout results in time removal
  • Tardiness Policy: No more than 3 tardies allowed
  • Holiday Work: If holidays are not requested in time off, traveler is expected to work if the facility is open
  • Inclement Weather: Travelers will be assigned to inclement weather teams with specific expectations

Required Experience & Skills

  • Minimum 2 years of experience as a Sterile Processing Technician
  • Sterile Processing Technician experience within the last year
  • Experience working with Level 1 Trauma patients
  • National certification: CBSPD or HSPA required

Certifications & Licenses

  • National Certification: CBSPD and/or HSPA required
  • BLS: Not required for this position
  • Physical Assessment: MUSC-specific physical assessment form for Sterile Processors, completed and signed by a licensed provider within 1 year of start
  • Fit Test: N95 fit test within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually (specific mask models required)
  • Background Checks: Comprehensive background check including 7 years of history, sex offender registry, national criminal, and other required searches
  • Education Verification: Required; diploma or transcripts accepted as placeholder if verification is pending
  • References: Proof of 2 clinical references required
  • Work History Verification: Last 3 clinical employers verified

Health & Safety Requirements

  • Physical Exam: Initial and annual physical exam attesting ability to meet job demands
  • Lab Work: Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP) and Complete Blood Count (CBC) with differential required due to chemical exposure risk
  • Immunizations & Titers:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap within 10 years or declination form
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: Positive titer or vaccination series required; boosters may be needed for low or negative titers
    • Hepatitis B: Titer, vaccine series, or declination required
    • Seasonal Flu Vaccine: Required during flu season (Aug 1 – Mar 31); medical/religious exemptions accepted but no declinations
  • TB Testing: Negative T-spot or Q-Gold within 90 days; annual TB questionnaire required
  • Drug Screening: 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start; no instant tests accepted

Facility & Orientation

  • Level I Trauma Center, Teaching Facility, Magnet Hospital
  • Total staffed beds: 820
  • Parking fee applies nights and weekends only ($20 one-time pass)
  • Orientation modules (~2 hours) must be completed prior to start; failure to complete results in being sent home
  • Clear, passport-style badge photo required before start
  • COVID-19 vaccination not required but highly preferred; vaccination records must be uploaded or declination form completed

Additional Notes

  • Local candidates within 60 miles may be considered on a case-by-case basis
  • Hurricane season (June–November) may require assignment to emergency response teams
  • All required documents (driver’s license, social security card, I-9 attestation) must be submitted prior to contract start
  • Radiation badge not required for this position

This position is ideal for experienced Sterile Processing Technicians with prior travel contract experience seeking a 13-week travel assignment in a Level I Trauma Center environment with evening shifts and rotating weekends.
