Registered Nurse (ICU Charge Float Pool) - Denver Zone 3, CO
Location
- Work zone covers a 60-mile radius around Denver city center.
- Must be able to float to multiple facilities within this zone (no home base facility).
- Facilities include hospitals in Lakewood, Longmont, Westminster, and Denver area.
- Housing must allow feasible travel within the full 60-mile zone.
Contract Details
- Contract length: 13 weeks
- Shift: Nights
- Hours per day: 12
- Hours per week: 36
Unit and Patient Population
- ICU Charge Nurse Float Pool covering multiple ICU types: MICU, SICU, TICU, CVICU, etc.
- Nurse-to-patient ratios vary from 1:1 to 1:3 depending on acuity.
- High acuity patients (e.g., CRRT, IABP, Impella) require 1:1 care.
- Charge nurse may respond to hospital-wide Codes and Rapid Responses.
- No nurse aides assigned; sitter support only.
- Respiratory Therapist coverage available but not always on unit 24/7; RNs assist with respiratory troubleshooting.
- RNs must read and interpret telemetry strips independently (no telemetry tech support).
Required Certifications
- BLS (AHA)
- ACLS (AHA)
- NIHSS
- TNCC
Experience Requirements
- Minimum 2 years ICU experience plus prior charge nurse experience.
- If first-time traveler: minimum 3+ years ICU experience and Epic electronic health record experience preferred.
- Prior travel experience preferred but not strictly required.
Clinical Skills
- Comfortable titrating all critical drips including pressors, sedation, paralytics, antiarrhythmics, heparin, insulin, and others.
- Able to float across acuity levels including ICU, PCU/Stepdown, and Medical-Surgical Telemetry units.
Scheduling and Orientation
- Schedule released 4–6 weeks in advance.
- Two scheduling formats:
- Assigned to a single facility for the week with possible float within that facility.
- Just-In-Time (JIT) assignment: facility assigned 1–2 hours before shift start.
- Orientation: 1-2 days with a preceptor.
- Must be in-state for orientation week (remote completion of modules allowed).
- Weekend shifts: 6-9 per 6-week schedule.
- May be required to work holidays.
- Rare call or standby requirements for low census.
- All time off requests must be submitted before assignment start.
Additional Notes
- Dress code: Any scrub color allowed.
- Must float throughout the entire zone regardless of housing location.
- Charge nurse typically does not take patient assignments unless necessary, more common on night shifts.
- No home base facility; flexibility and mobility within the zone are essential.
