Registered Nurse (Neuro Med-Surg Acute) - Illinois

Unit Details
- Department: Neuro Med-Surg Acute
- Unit size: 54 beds (2 semi-private)
- Nurse-to-patient ratios:
- Day shift: 1:4-5
- Night shift: 1:5-6
- Patient types: Stroke, spine surgery, seizure, brain tumor, head injury, neuroscience cases, some medical overflow
- Telemetry: House-wide telemetry with Phillips monitors; nurses do not read their own strips
- Respiratory equipment: High flow oxygen for stable COVID patients (rare); RNs troubleshoot only
- Support staff: Nurse aides/patient care techs with ratios of approximately 1:9-12 depending on shift
- Charge nurse and house supervisor present 24/7; charge nurse generally does not take patient assignments unless staffing is short
- Floating: Float in rotation with general unit staff; travelers may float only to units where they are competent and paired with trained nurses
Schedule
- Shift: Nights
- Shift length: 12 hours
- Hours per week: 36
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday both shifts)
- Holiday requirement: Every other holiday
- No call or standby requirement
- Scheduling tries to accommodate requests and may block shifts if staffing allows
Orientation
- 2 days unit-specific orientation including computer training and precepted patient care
- 12 non-billable orientation hours (guaranteed hours do not apply during orientation)
Required Certifications & Skills
- BLS (AHA)
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Level 1 trauma experience required
- Previous travel nursing experience required (no first-time travelers)
- Prior experience working on a dedicated neuro unit required
- Experience titrating drips, including heparin drip based on PTT
Clinical Responsibilities
- RNs are required to titrate drips (e.g., heparin)
- Tattoos must be covered on duty; no piercings except ears
- No scrub color requirement
Licensing & Compliance
- Active Illinois RN license required or proof that application process has been initiated
- Must comply with drug-free campus policy and produce a negative drug screen for all panels
Additional Notes
- Call off policy: Equivalent of 12 hours off every 13 weeks with no penalty or pay requirement
- Local rate adjustments apply for clinicians living within 50 miles (not included here per instructions)
