Step Down RN Travel Contract
Overview
- Location: Charlottesville, Virginia
- Employment type: Travel/Contract
- Shift: Day, 4x12 hours
- Weekly hours: 48
- Contract length: 14 weeks
- Unit type: Acute and intermediate care for thoracic, cardiac, and vascular surgical patients
- Patient ratio: 4–5:1 in acute care; 3:1 in TIMU
- Scheduling notes: Every other weekend; must work 2 of the 3 winter holidays; block scheduling cannot be guaranteed
- Time off: Up to 40 hours can be approved
- Assignment extension: May be offered through 01/02/2027
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Virginia
- Stepdown experience within the last year
- 2 years of stepdown experience
- BLS issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Experience with Epic
Preferred Qualifications
- ACLS certification
Unit Highlights
- 28-bed unit with 22 acute-care beds and 6 IMU beds
- Cares for post-op and higher-acuity thoracic, cardiac, and vascular surgical patients
- TIMU patients may include fresh lobectomies, thrombolytic TPA patients, AAA, CABG/valve, and lung transplant cases
- TIMU also accommodates select cardiac drips and arterial lines

- 7-year criminal background check required
- Education verification required
- Primary source license verification required
- Nursys verification required for RNs
- Pass/fail cardiac rhythm assessment required during orientation for adult inpatient RN positions
- TB screening required
- Drug screen required
- Seasonal flu vaccination required
- Tdap, MMR, hepatitis B, varicella, and negative TB/chest X-ray documentation required
- 2 clinical references required

Pros
Amazing with teaching and doing most up to date evidence based practice interventions. They were very traveler friendly and offered extensions for travelers that had a good work ethic.
Cons
Parking was horrible, had to park far away and or at a parking garage then take a shuttle to and from the hospital which was very confusing at first. Upon being offered an extension of my contract they offered a few hundred dollars off so that was one of main reasons why I didn’t extend my contract.
