Registered Nurse (RN) – PICU
Location: Morgantown, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Overview
- Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) with 20 total beds; average daily census ~15
- Patient population includes congenital heart cases, DKA, respiratory issues, neurosurgery, tracheostomies, ventilator-dependent patients, G-tubes
- Unit may take adult patients; candidates must be comfortable caring for adults if needed
- Pediatrician, residents, and advanced practice providers (APP) available in-house 24/7 with call room on unit
- Respiratory therapy equipment managed by RTs (vents, CPAP, BiPAP)
- Telemetry monitored off-unit; central monitors at ICU and stepdown desks; RNs do not read strips on unit
Staffing & Ratios
- ICU nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:1 to 1:2
- Stepdown nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:3
- Charge nurse role depends on staffing; house supervisor is always free
- Nurse aides present: 1-2 during day, 1 at night; assist with feeding, fingerstick blood sugars, equipment needs, and bed prep
Scheduling & Shifts
- 12-hour shifts: 7am–7pm and 7pm–7am
- Self-scheduling with possibility for block scheduling, balanced by scheduling team
- Weekend requirement: 2 weekends per 4-week schedule (Friday–Sunday count as weekend shifts)
- Holiday work required, integrated into permanent staff holiday rotation
- No call or standby requirement
- Floating required within children’s units (Labor & Delivery, NICU, Acute Pediatrics) with normal unit ratios
Required Certifications & Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of PICU experience (hard requirement)
- BLS and PALS certifications required
- Must be licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN)
- Ability to titrate drips including sedation (Fentanyl, Versed, Precedex) and vasoactive drugs per physician orders
Orientation & Training
- Unit-specific orientation includes EPIC training, new staff orientation (NSO), competencies, equipment review with clinical preceptor
- 3 shifts in PICU with a mentor before independent practice
Additional Requirements
- Fully COVID-19 vaccinated (2 doses Moderna/Pfizer or 1 dose J&J) or approved medical/religious exemption
- Driver’s license address must be outside a 50-mile radius from the facility
- Previous permanent candidates must have been off the unit for 2 years before reapplying
- Previous travelers must have been off the unit for 2 years after completing a full year
- Only 2 candidates submitted per opening; travel teams must be submitted together
Dress Code
- Scrubs in dark gray (pewter) color
