Registered Nurse (RN) – MedSurg Hematology/Oncology Unit

Location: Jackson, Mississippi
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights (7pm–7am)
Hours: 12-hour shifts, approximately 36 hours per week


Unit Overview

  • 32-bed MedSurg Hematology/Oncology unit
  • Patient population includes hematology/oncology patients receiving chemotherapy
  • Typical nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:5, occasionally up to 1:6; adjusted for higher acuity patients
  • Telemetry monitors on all patients with central monitoring stations; RNs collaborate with monitoring techs
  • Common equipment includes CPAP, BiPAP (primarily at night), and respiratory therapy support available
  • Charge nurse takes light patient assignments and can take full load if needed
  • Floating required within MedSurg units based on skillset; higher acuity patients assigned to core staff

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Mississippi
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Minimum 2 years Med Surg nursing experience, with Med Surg experience within the last year
  • Experience working with Level 1 Trauma patients
  • Recent experience at a large hospital (500+ beds) facility
  • BLS certification
  • Proficiency with Epic electronic health record system
  • Comfortable with chest tubes

Preferred Experience & Skills

  • Previous travel nursing assignment with references highly preferred
  • Comfort with lines, chest tubes, and hematology/oncology care
  • Chemotherapy experience preferred but not required; training on chemo administration provided by manager
  • Experience in a busy, high-acuity environment with strong time management skills
  • Ability to titrate heparin drips; familiarity with cardiac drips a plus (primarily on other units)
  • Positive attitude and teamwork mindset essential

Scheduling & Work Environment

  • 12-hour night shifts (7pm–7am)
  • Weekend work: typically every other weekend or 2 weekends per month; may vary based on department needs
  • Holiday rotation with regular staff
  • No call or standby requirements
  • Block scheduling possible but depends on unit needs; travelers expected to fill scheduling gaps
  • Dress code: solid color professional scrubs (any color)

Orientation

  • First day includes paperwork, system logins (Omnicell, Epic), and unit tour
  • Followed by 2 additional 12-hour shifts with a preceptor

Additional Notes

  • Attendance is critical: no more than 2 call-offs allowed and punctuality is required
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills are important for success on this busy unit
