Job Opportunity: Medical Surgical Registered Nurse

Location: Florence, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Details

  • Shift: Day shift, 4 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 AM – 7:30 PM)
  • Patient Ratios: Typically 1:6; may flex to 1:7 during unplanned absences
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • On-Call: Yes, as needed for low census
  • Floating: Required to float within scope to like units or sister facilities

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in South Carolina
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Minimum 2 years of Medical Surgical nursing experience, with experience within the last year
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system

Additional Requirements & Information

  • First-Time Travelers: Accepted
  • Local Candidates: Not accepted (must be willing to travel)
  • Schedule Flexibility: Block schedule accommodation may be requested but is not guaranteed
  • Guaranteed Hours: Facility may call off 1 shift every 2 weeks
  • Travel Radius: Within 60 miles of Florence, SC

Health & Compliance Requirements

  • Background Checks:
    • Annual comprehensive background check covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years
    • Includes SSN trace, state and national criminal checks, sex offender registry, and federal exclusions lists
    • International background checks required if applicable
  • Drug Screening: 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start (no instant tests)
  • Immunizations & Titers:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap within 10 years or declination form
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines; boosters required if low titer
    • Hepatitis B: Titer, vaccine series, or declination; boosters allowed if low/non-reactive titer
    • Varicella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines; boosters required if low titer
  • Tuberculosis Testing:
    • 2-step PPD or Quantiferon Gold within 90 days of contract start (T-spot not accepted)
    • If positive, chest X-ray required
  • Physical Exam: Initial and annual physical exam attesting ability to meet job demands
  • Respirator Clearance: Annual medical clearance required for respirator use
  • Seasonal Flu Vaccine: Required during flu season (Aug 1 – Mar 31); medical/religious exemptions accepted but no declinations
  • COVID-19 Vaccination: Not required but highly preferred; vaccination records must be uploaded or declination form completed

Documentation & Onboarding

  • Required Documents:
    • Valid Driver’s License or State ID
    • Social Security Card or SSN verification
    • Employment application/resume
    • Proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations
    • Recent performance evaluation (within 12 months)
    • Skills checklist updated annually
    • Radiation badge if assigned to specific departments (OR, Cath Lab, EP Lab, Radiology) – not required for MedSurg
  • Facility-Specific:
    • Signed assignment acknowledgment, confidentiality agreements, code of conduct, HR policy manual, and system user agreements prior to start
    • Passport-style photo for badge
    • Completion of orientation modules and first day instructions before starting (approx. 4 hours)
    • Upload vaccination and flu documentation into facility system prior to start
  • Competency Exams: Medication and other competency exams as applicable

  • Hurricane Season: June through November; travelers may be assigned to emergency response teams during this period. Confirm availability before accepting assignments during peak months (August and September).
  • Licensure Processing:
    • SC RN license issuance typically takes 3-5 weeks (longer for international education)
    • Temporary “walk-through” license process available (24-48 business hours) if no prior background issues and candidate has not started permanent licensure process
